Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: Substitute Custodian
STATUS: 4-8 hours per work day;
As-Needed Basis, Substitute, Non-Exempt
PAY CATEGORY: Paid according to the applicable substitute pay rate for assigned position.
REPORTS TO: Custodial Manager, Director of Maintenance and/or Building Principal
POSITION SUMMARY: The Substitute Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, safe, sanitary, and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors during the absence of a regular custodian. This position performs routine custodial, cleaning, light maintenance, and event support duties while ensuring District facilities are maintained in accordance with established standards, safety practices, and District procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Report to the assigned work location at the scheduled start time and receive daily assignments from the Building Principal, Custodial Manager, Director of Maintenance, or designee.
- Clean and maintain assigned areas including classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, cafeterias, gyms, libraries, entrances, stairwells, and other District facilities.
- Perform routine custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing, disinfecting, polishing, and floor care as assigned.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish restroom supplies, soap, paper products, and other consumable items.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and properly dispose of waste.
- Clean windows, doors, walls, furniture, desks, fixtures, drinking fountains, and other surfaces as assigned.
- Assist with room setups and breakdowns for meetings, activities, athletic events, performances, and other District functions.
- Operate custodial equipment and cleaning tools safely and in accordance with District procedures.
- Safely handle, store, and use cleaning supplies and chemicals in accordance with applicable safety regulations and District procedures.
- Identify and report maintenance, safety, security, or equipment concerns to the Building Principal, Custodial Manager, Director of Maintenance, or designee.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and other routine duties within the scope of the position.
- Assist with basic grounds maintenance, painting, moving furniture or equipment, and other general maintenance duties as assigned.
- Help ensure buildings, classrooms, and assigned areas are properly secured at the end of the work shift, including locking doors and reporting security concerns.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following all District safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and visitors while providing courteous customer service.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, and District operations.
- Utilize computers and technology to support district-related training, processes, and other operational activities.
- Follow all District policies, administrative regulations, and applicable local, state, and federal laws and safety requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Custodial Manager, Director of Maintenance, Building Principal, or designee.
ESSENTIAL

- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, staff, administrators, and the public.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while completing assigned tasks efficiently.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing assignments.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment, hand tools, and cleaning equipment.
- Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with established procedures.
- Ability to recognize and report maintenance, safety, and security concerns.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor throughout the workday.
- Ability to maintain regular, reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Demonstrated commitment to maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming school facilities.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Demonstrated aptitude for custodial, cleaning, or general maintenance work.
- Ability to read and write sufficiently to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate custodial equipment and cleaning tools safely.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Prior custodial, maintenance, or facilities experience is preferred but not required.
