Solid Waste Convenience Attendant
Public Works – Solid Waste, FLSA: N
JOB SUMMARYThis position performs maintenance and customer service duties at a solid waste convenience center.
MAJOR DUTIES- Inspects vehicles for current Lincoln County stickers.
- Maintains daily customer counts.
- Directs the public to proper location for disposal of solid waste.
- Maintains site cleanliness.
- Cleans and sanitizes office building and restrooms.
- Calls for pick-up of full containers, bins, or boxes.
- Closes off sites when truck arrives to pick up containers.
- Operates backhoe and loader to maintain brush pile.
- Operates blowers to keep areas clean.
- Reports maintenance or repair needs to supervisor.
- Provides information to the public concerning recycling and solid waste disposal.
- Unlocks and locks gates.
- Performs related duties.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
- Knowledge of prohibited waste.
- Skill in the operation of a backhoe and other assigned equipment.
- Skill in the provision of customer services.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
The Convenience Site Supervisor assigns work in terms of detailed and specific instructions. The supervisor spot‑checks work in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINESGuidelines include county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are clear and specific.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK- The work consists of directly related duties in support of convenience center operations. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to assist customers at a solid waste convenience center. Success in this position contributes to the provision of solid waste and recycling services to the public.
- Contacts are typically with other county employees and members of the general public.
- Contacts are typically to provide services or to give or exchange information.
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
