JOB SUMMARYUnder the general supervision of a Head Custodian performs routine custodial, repair and cleaning work at schools and does related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION- High School Diploma or equivalent knowledge, experience or training as required by OAR , Oregon Department of Education.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Demonstrated ability to pass a background check.
- Possess or ability to obtain a valid First Aid Card.
- Ability to adjust daily work hours throughout the year in accordance with district needs as directed by the principal and supervisor (summer and break hours).
- Ability to complete district-provided training for handling of blood borne pathogens, asbestos, and hazardous chemicals.
- Modern cleaning methods and the use, care and safety of cleaning materials and equipment.
- Requirements for maintaining school buildings and facilities in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
- Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine buildings and facilities maintenance work.
- Operation of heating plant and equipment.
- Lay out work and to estimate time, tools and materials needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and expertise in the basic techniques of electrical layout and repair, basic plumbing, mechanics, maintenance, carpentry and facility maintenance.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with students, fellow employees and the general public.
- Obtain and maintain an Oregon Driver's License.
- Perform physical requirements which may include:
- Moderate to extensive degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional lifting up to 100 lbs
- Frequent and prolonged standing, walking and bending
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions of heat, cold and where ventilation may be inadequate
- May require exposure to chemicals, dirt, paint, chalk, noise, odors and the possibility of electrical shock
- Ability to operate buffers, scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, and other equipment
- Ability to climb ladders, stretch and bend to perform cleaning, repairs, painting, cleaning roof, gutters and drains
- Possible exposure to bodily fluids in cleaning due to student illness or injury
- Ensures the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, are neat, clean and free of graffiti at all times.
- Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are locked after the hours of building occupancy.
- Lower the flag(s) at the end of the shift.
- Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of all trash, rubbish, waste and chemicals.
- Collaborates with head custodian/site administrator and teaching staff regarding special custodial needs.
- Inspects building for fire, electrical and other safety hazards.
- Performs the cleaning of walls, furniture, woodwork and other equipment and sees that floors are stripped and waxed periodically.
- Checks on restrooms and replenishes supplies.
- Welcomes and directs visitors and safeguards all school property.
- Sees that rooms are set up for special events and needs.
- Participates in complete cleaning and routine maintenance during summer.
- Responds to emergency situations, such as, water leaks, fires and snow removal. This duty may require adjustment to irregular or extended hours necessary to cope with the problem.
- Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures.
- Regular and acceptable attendance is required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
