Building Services Worker II
Position Summary:
The Building Services Worker II duties are inclusive of those of the BSW I and include sweeping, dust mopping and wet mopping of floors, high and low dusting of horizontal and vertical surfaces. The role requires use of small custodial equipment, cleaning windows, seals, walls, furniture, and other equipment, collecting and removing trash and recyclable waste, securing university buildings, assisting with delivery and transportation of supplies, cleaning and disinfecting various surfaces, maintaining supplies, performing bodily fluid clean‑up or specialized disinfection, replacing light bulbs, and operating large specialized floor‑care equipment.
The position also involves safe operation and maintenance of equipment, building walk‑through inspections, and equipment inspections.
- Sweep, dust mopping, and wet mopping of floors; high and low dusting of horizontal and vertical surfaces.
- Use small custodial equipment such as vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, T‑1 scrubbers, and other machines that do not need extensive training.
- Clean windows, seals, walls, furniture, equipment, and other building fixtures.
- Collect and remove large quantities of trash and recyclable waste.
- Secure and unlock university buildings and assist in delivering, receiving, and transporting supplies.
- Clean, sanitize, and disinfect surfaces including glass, windows, doors and knobs, electrical switches, blinds, tables, furniture, and building fixtures.
- Maintain adequate supplies in restrooms and janitorial closets.
- Perform bodily fluid clean‑up or specialized viral/bacterial disinfection with a blood borne pathogen kit.
- Perform minor light‑bulb replacement from an 8’ ladder.
- Operate large specialized floor‑care equipment for carpet cleaning and extraction, stripping/waxing and refinishing wood floors.
- Ensure safe operation and operator‑level maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Conduct weekly walk‑through inspections of buildings, assist with equipment inspections, and submit inspection reports to the lead/supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Custodial experience and equipment use: proficiency with vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, T‑1 scrubbers, and other small machines; experience with floor‑care equipment such as carpet extraction, stripping/waxing, refinishing wood floors; experience with large floor‑care equipment.
- Soft skills and availability: strong communication and teamwork abilities; flexibility to work night shifts and weekends as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships.
- Available to work specified shift, nights, and weekends as needed.
- Lift up to 40 lbs.
- Push and pull custodial carts up to 40 lbs.
- Load and unload floor‑care machines up to 40 lbs.
- Frequently bend, squat, lift, kneel, and work with hands above head.
- Prolonged walking to and from buildings; climb stairs and ride elevators.
- Work from 8 ft. ladders.
