Tax Manager
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Tax Senior to join our collaborative, people‑first team.
As a Tax Senior, you will take ownership of tax engagements from start to finish — preparing and reviewing federal and state returns for individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts, estates, and non‑profits while directly supervising and developing staff. You will serve as a key point of coordination between staff and managers, ensuring work is technically sound, on time, and delivered to firm standards.
This role is well suited for someone who is ready to take on greater responsibility, sharpen their technical expertise, and begin developing the client service and leadership skills that will carry them forward in their career.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare federal and state tax returns for individuals, businesses, trusts, and estates at varying levels of complexity.
- Directly supervise staff during engagements — assign work thoughtfully, monitor progress, hold regular status updates, and communicate issues to the manager or senior manager in a timely manner.
- Review staff work papers and provide clear, constructive feedback to ensure compliance with firm quality and documentation standards.
- Perform an effective self‑review, catching errors before submission and proactively maintaining a checklist of prior review points to prevent repeat comments.
- Communicate engagement status, budget variances, and timing risks to the manager or senior manager as early as possible.
- Research moderately complex tax issues and document findings clearly, escalating significant matters to the manager, senior manager, or partner as appropriate.
- Identify additional services Wilson Lewis can provide to address client needs observed during engagements.
- Serve as a buddy and mentor to assigned staff — meet regularly, provide real‑time feedback, and communicate development opportunities to senior leadership.
- Participate in firm‑sponsored networking events and professional development activities, including at least 40 hours of technical CPE annually.
- Contribute to firm initiatives beyond direct client service, including recruiting, process improvement, and staff development.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- 2–5 years of public accounting experience in tax preparation and review.
- Proficiency preparing business and individual returns.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- CPA license or Enrolled Agent (EA) or actively pursuing completion of CPA exam.
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff.
- Proficiency with CCH Axcess, Ultra Tax, Quick Books, and Microsoft Office.
- Exposure to multi‑state, trust, or other specialty tax areas.
