Federal Tax – Tax Principal

We are looking for a tax expert to join an entrepreneurial firm which is one of the fastest growing in the U.S. As a Tax Principal focused on growing the Houston market, you will serve as a key business advisor delivering industry‑focused tax advisory and compliance services to middle‑market clients, working side‑by‑side with firm leadership and associates to serve clients and build the business, having a direct impact on the firm’s success.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the tax services function, providing federal tax compliance and consulting services to commercial clients.
  • Act as a trusted tax business advisor, leading client relationships on day‑to‑day matters with a range of clients from middle‑market to multinational.
  • Consult on technical matters and special projects in corporate and flow‑through taxation, accounting methods and ASC 740.
  • Research tax matters, respond to IRS and other tax authority inquiries and make recommendations to clients.
  • Coordinate with specialty tax practices on complicated state, local, high‑net‑worth, international, R&D, credits and incentives matters.
  • Oversee federal and individual tax‑planning responsibilities, review complex tax research on a wide range of issues related to business transactions.
  • Provide recommendations for business and process improvements based on client operations and objectives.
  • Manage client engagement staffing, billings/collections, and ensure client profitability targets are met.
  • Build and nurture relationships internally and externally to acquire new clients, projects and revenue; actively participate in RFPs.
  • Collaborate with service line leadership to develop tax service market positioning, branding, strategy and messaging.
  • Invest in personal and firm‑wide learning and development programs.
  • Support the growth and development of team members, helping associates meet professional goals and supporting recruitment of future staff.
  • Demonstrate leadership, initiative, excellent team skills and high ethical standards.
  • Represent the firm at key community events, firm functions and other meetings.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required;
    Master’s or advanced degree desirable.
  • CPA or JD required.
  • 15+ years of experience providing federal tax compliance and consulting services in a professional services firm; relevant industry experience considered.
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience mentoring and counseling associates.
  • Demonstrated management, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, project management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and supervise others, provide exceptional client service, demonstrate commitment to continuous learning, see the big picture as well as details, display ethical knowledge and commit to quality and timely completion of projects.
  • Highly developed software and Microsoft Suite skills.
