PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITY (JOB PURPOSE)The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the organization's financial records and supporting sound financial stewardship through accurate accounting, reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities. This position oversees day-to-day accounting operations, assists with financial planning and analysis, supports HRSA and grant compliance requirements, and collaborates with operational leaders to ensure effective financial management across the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Operational Oversight- Provides day-to-day functional oversight, coaching, and support to accounting and billing staff to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant work. This position does not have direct reports and does not carry authority for hiring, discipline, or performance evaluation.
- Assists in the preparation of financial, grant, audit, cost report, UDS, and regulatory reports.
- Supports continuous improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Collaborates with operational leaders to resolve billing, reimbursement, and patient account issues.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
- Maintains the general ledger and records accounting transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Prepares accurate monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash reconciliations, and other routine accounting functions.
- Reviews financial information for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with organizational policies.
- Analyzes financial results and identifies trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
- Supports audits and responds to requests from external auditors and regulatory agencies.
- Assists in developing annual operating and grant budgets.
- Develops financial models, forecasts, and budget-to-actual analyses.
- Prepares financial presentations and reports for executive leadership and the Board.
- Partners with department leaders to monitor financial performance and productivity.
- Maintains the confidentiality of financial, patient, and employee information in accordance with HIPAA, the HEAL confidentiality policy, and applicable federal and state law.
- Adheres to HEAL policies, HRSA Health Center Program requirements, and applicable grant terms and conditions.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
- Three to five years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
- Knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, financial reporting, grants management, and internal controls.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and customer service.
- Must clear a background check and federal and state exclusion screening, including the Office of Inspector General List of Excluded Individuals and Entities, the System for Award Management, and the Georgia Medicaid exclusion list, prior to and throughout employment.
- Healthcare, nonprofit, or Federally Qualified Health Center accounting experience.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
- Experience with accounting and practice management software.
