Ajax Building Company is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to lead the development of accurate, detailed cost estimates for complex commercial construction projects. This is a highly technical, hands-on role focused on building complete estimates from the ground up—developing quantities based on drawings and project information.

Ajax Building Company is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to lead the development of accurate, detailed cost estimates for complex commercial construction projects. This is a highly technical, hands-on role focused on building complete estimates from the ground up—developing quantities based on drawings and project information.

The Senior Estimator reports to and is directly accountable to the Chief Estimator and plays a key role in delivering comprehensive, data-driven cost models that support successful project pursuits.

This role is ideal for an experienced estimator who enjoys staying close to the work—diving into the details, building estimates personally, and taking full ownership of accuracy and outcomes within a focused, collaborative environment.

Essential Functions

  • Lead the development of complete, bottom-up estimates for assigned projects
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and build estimates based on project documents and company cost data
  • Analyze historical cost data and incorporate trends and lessons learned into estimates
  • Review drawings, specifications, and project documentation to ensure complete scope coverage
  • Maintain thorough, well-organized backup documentation for all estimate assumptions and quantities
  • Coordinate internally to validate scope, assumptions, and constructability considerations
  • Support estimate updates, revisions, and cost comparisons throughout the preconstruction process
  • Assist with cost tracking, change orders, and estimate reconciliation on awarded projects as needed
  • Mentor and support junior estimators as appropriate while remaining directly involved in estimate development
  • Perform additional assignments to support the Estimating team
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent technical training)
  • 7–10+ years of construction estimating experience
  • Strong experience developing detailed, bottom-up estimates required
  • Deep understanding of construction methods, sequencing, and cost drivers across multiple CSI divisions
  • Ability to read and interpret complex drawings and specifications
Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in On-Screen Takeoff (or similar), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), Bluebeam and/or Adobe
  • Preferred:

    Experience with DESTINI Estimator (or similar), Earth Works
Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with the ability to build accurate, detailed estimates from project documents and cost data
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
