Job Summary

The Department Chair’s responsibilities include oversight for and/or participation in departmental teaching, research, and scholarship. This is a full-time position with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor reporting to the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences. The tenure status will be determined based on the qualifications of the final candidate and will be confirmed in the final offer along with position expectations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision, support, and oversight for all faculty and staff.
  • Hire all faculty and staff and be responsible for all disciplinary actions.
  • Be responsible for the assessment and evaluation of all faculty and staff with the input and assistance of the Program Director.
  • Support the Speech-Language Pathology Program Director in achieving excellence in academic programming and development.
  • Critically review enrollment trends and implement plans to balance enrollment numbers with faculty capacity and department mission in teaching, research, service, and clinical practice.
  • Administer and oversee the department’s operations and budget.
  • Advise and lead faculty in the promotion and tenure process.
  • Advise students on program, college, and university policies.
  • Meet with class officers at least once each semester to maintain communication and gather information about program conduct.
  • Meet with the entire student class as needed.
  • Maintain and encourage a positive environment for all faculty, staff, and students.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor policies and procedures for the department.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Provide effective team building for the department.
  • Organize, administer, and manage fiscal operations, continuous programmatic review and analysis, planning, development, and completion of the CAA and ASHA required documents.
  • Cultivate a department as a community of scholars rooted in trust and transparency.
  • Supervise the Clinical Director, faculty, and staff in all activities related to the Program.
  • Prepare reports for external and internal constituents such as the Dean, CAA, and ASHA.
  • Conduct annual faculty performance evaluations and forward results to the Dean’s Office.
  • Assign teaching responsibilities and workloads to faculty comparable to other faculty within the College of Allied Health Sciences.
  • Participate in the appointment, promotion, and tenure process.
Other Administrative Functions

This role includes responsibilities specific to the department’s administrative functions, such as fiscal management, continuous programmatic review, policy development, and compliance with accreditation requirements.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in a related area or an EdD.
  • Licensed to practice Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) in the U.S.
  • At least 7 years of combined academic and clinical experience, including program directing and managing faculty.
  • Graduate from an accredited SLP program.
  • Prior experience in an academic administrative role with teaching experience.
  • Evidence of teaching ability and scholarly activity.
  • Required faculty employment qualifications for all U.S. institutions and all academic ranks: consistent with SACSCOC requirements for institutional accreditation; evidence of ability as a teacher; evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned; successful experience (waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.
