LECTURER – GENERAL EDUCATION

(NON-TENURE TRACK)

OVERVIEW

Morris Brown College invites applications for a part-time, non-tenure track Lecturer in the Department of General Education. The successful candidate will report to the Department Chair and support the mission of Academic Affairs. This position carries a teaching load of five (5) courses each semester, delivered face-to-face and/or synchronously, and includes academic advising and institutional service responsibilities.

JOB DUTIES

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following requirements as defined by TRACS accreditation standards, the board-approved Faculty Handbook, administrative policies, and state requirements set forth by The Georgia Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission (GNPEC). Faculty members are expected to be effective teachers and excel in course instruction. The minimum expectations of faculty who teach at Morris Brown College are outlined below:

Teaching Effectiveness

  • Possess thorough and accurate knowledge of the specific field or discipline, including the ability to evaluate and apply content
  • Select and develop instructional materials; plan and organize instruction to enhance student learning; create appropriate assignments to encourage student learning, the development of communication skills, and higher-order thinking; and use available instructional technology, as appropriate
  • Use a variety of proven methods of engagement and assessment that facilitate student mastery of content
  • Provide students constructive, encouraging, and corrective feedback
  • Evaluate student learning by creating and applying course competencies and accurately assessing student progress
  • Strive to increase teaching effectiveness through appropriate teaching and learning strategies; evaluate student learning and modify instructional methods as needed to meet diverse student needs

Content Expertise

  • Demonstrate deep subject knowledge, including key concepts, current and relevant research, methodologies, tools and techniques, and meaningful applications
  • Be committed to professional development by keeping current in the respective discipline
  • Maintain faculty credentials as required by the college's accrediting agencies
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in clear communication of subject matter to students

Professional Responsibilities

  • Provide timely, substantive feedback in appropriate forms
  • Meet classes as scheduled; notify the appropriate Department Chair, Assistant Provost, or Provost in advance of any absence and, if possible, arrange for a substitute instructor or assignments
  • Be accessible to students through email, wireless/cellular technology, or scheduled office hours, including arranging additional time for appointments when necessary
  • Prepare and distribute syllabi in accordance with established procedures and guidelines, and follow the published final exam schedule
  • Maintain accurate records of students' academic standing; promptly provide final grades, attendance, and other information as required by administration
  • Respect the confidentiality of student information; refrain from discussing or releasing such information except within recognized limits
  • Evaluate students based solely on their academic performance and respond promptly to student grade questions and/or appeals
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The Lecturer must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline from an accredited institution required
  • Doctorate degree preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and related teaching experience may be considered

  • The Lecturer will work collaboratively with other faculty, administrators, and department staff to advance the academic mission of the College

JOB TYPE

Part-time, non-tenure track, 9-month appointment. Minimum 20 hours per week. Working hours will occasionally include evenings and weekends during peak periods, including registration, grading cycles, and institutional review seasons.
