Morehouse College Summer VISTA Strong Start Reading Program
The Strong Start Reading Program is seeking individuals interested in further refining an already successful Strong Start Reading Program, through recruitment of mentors who will read with youth during the school year. The program is geared toward 1‑3 graders who are not reading on grade level. The Summer VISTAS will continue to recruit, train and communicate with existing mentors in order to retain them.
They will also implement a Summer Ornithology Program, part of our Youth Entrepreneurship Club, to expose youth to the world of birds and teach them the important role birds play in our ecosystem. The Summer VISTAS will expand the database of mentors, businesses, and non‑profit support to help grow our volunteer program support.
The VISTAS will attend community meetings, plan recruitment efforts for mentors, attend workshops on Leadership, Fundraising/Grant Writing, Team Building, and implement the ornithology curriculum for middle school youth.
