Reports to: Director of Learning Technology and Library Services

Position Overview: The Middle School Librarian is a visionary and innovative educator who is responsible for leading collaborative planning and teaching to develop media and information literacy mindsets in faculty, staff, and students. This individual will work closely with the Director of Learning Technology and Library Services, middle school academic technology coordinator, K-12 library department, and school faculty to support student learning while creating a welcoming and innovative library program that encourages knowledge acquisition and both media and digital literacy.

The ideal candidate enjoys unlocking media and information systems with Middle School students and encourages a continued love of reading.

Responsibilities of the Middle School Librarian Instruction and Collaboration
  • Design and facilitate engaging learning experiences that develop information and media literacy skills and mindsets
  • Provide instruction using innovative strategies based on best practices that foster critical thinking and creativity
  • Collaborate with classroom educators to establish learning objectives and assessment strategies, and to develop learning experiences that build information and media literacy skills
  • Empower all members of the learning community to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, curators, and ethical users of information
  • Collaborate with K-12 library staff to promote and grow library services within the larger community
Library Program Management
  • Create welcoming physical and digital library environments that promote collaboration and inclusion, as well as allow for active, participatory, and inquiry-based learning
  • Curate a well-balanced collection that meets curricular and leisure reading needs of the school community
  • Manage library tasks such as collection development and evaluation, weeding, cataloging, inventory, etc.
Flexible Scheduling and Shared Services
  • Implement a responsive schedule that balances Middle School needs
  • Adjust time and presence based on instructional priorities and collaborative projects
  • Participate in department/grade level meetings to further connection and collaborative practices
Student Support and Engagement
  • Foster a love of reading and lifelong learning through programming, displays, and student interactions
  • Provide targeted support for research, technology use, and independent reading
  • Create opportunities for student voice and choice
  • Collaborate with the academic technology coordinator to integrate digital tools and media resources into instruction
  • Support the use of digital tools, databases, and media resources for learning
  • Guide students in the effective and ethical use of information
Professional Growth & Leadership
  • Plan and provide professional development opportunities for faculty and staff through evaluating, introducing, and modeling emerging technologies that will support curriculum goals
  • Proactively share resources and ideas regarding evolving trends in media and information literacy with students, faculty, and administrators
