Position Summary

The Division of Humanities, Social Science, Media and Arts ( HSSMA ) at Morehouse College invites applications for full-time Assistant Professor in Visual Arts (non-tenure-track) to start August 2027. Morehouse College is seeking innovators that lead students to creative outlets for further exposition of the Visual Arts through studio and lecture courses surrounding contemporary issues in the field that are accessible to broad audiences of students and the community.

Applicants should demonstrate interest and a level of engagement with the aesthetic influences of the African Diaspora.

The successful candidate will join the Visual Arts department during a time of growth. Morehouse College, together with Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University, is part of the Atlanta University Center Art History + Curatorial Studies Collective, now entering its seventh year. The Collective has positioned the AUC as a leading incubator of African American artists and museum professionals in the United States.

We offers majors and minors in Art, Art History, and Curatorial Studies through coursework and co-curricular opportunities on all three campuses.

Candidates must have a proven track record of art shows and artistic scholarship at the local or national level and be able to demonstrate interdisciplinary and creative approaches in teaching studio art and art appreciation courses with an interest in art of the African Diaspora and African American art and artists.

Applicants are required to have an M.F.A. in Studio Art with a concentration in one of the following disciplines:
Painting and drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture (including ceramics) or Photography and a minimum of three years of teaching experience in higher education beyond graduate school. The material taught in these courses should demonstrate an engagement with influences of the African Diaspora, inclusive of Afro-Futurism, Afro-Surrealism, Black Feminism, LGBTQ issues and/or other formal inquiries into and around the Black experience.

This position also requires engagement in the department, the HSSMA Division and the College and a commitment to the mission of Morehouse College—to develop men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students and by assuming a special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of Black people.

An official transcript will be required of the selected candidate. Applicants are also asked to identify their strengths and experiences in assisting Black students and men of color from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to accomplish curricular goals.
