The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.

Position Description

The Spelman College Department of Literature, Media, and Writing(formerly Department of English ) embraces an expansivevision of language and visual culture. Our curriculum promotesevidence-based argumentation; the pleasures of reading literary,theoretical, and visual texts; critical interpretation as a socialnecessity; and an awareness of the integral role of literary andvisual cultures in a free and just society. With deep roots in thegenealogies of Black feminism, our curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, aesthetic appreciation, and ethical commitments toprovide our students with a foundation in humanistic knowledge thatis important to all fields.

The Department of Literature, Media, and Writing (formerly English) at Spelman College invites applications for a full-time,tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Africana or Critical Black Studies to begin in Fall 2027 . We seek applicantswhose theoretical lenses include one or more of the following areas:
African lit and media, Black Ecology, Black Speculative Literature and Media, and/or Decoloniality. Spelman College faculty are hired as teacher-scholars. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a 3-3 course load, pursue an active research and publishing agenda, and possess a strong commitment to service. PhD required by August 2027.
