PositionDescription
The Department of Music at Spelman College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Choral Conducting. The successful candidate will serve as Director of the Spelman College Glee Club, teach choral conducting and two courses in their area of expertise, and contribute to the department’s teaching, recruitment, creative activity, and service.
Primary Responsibilities- Direct the Glee Club as a curricular ensemble.
- Prepare the ensemble for departmental performances, signature college events, and an annual spring tour.
- Develop and teach a broad range of choral repertoire, including traditional classical works, repertoire for women’s voices, and African American choral music.
- Teach choral conducting and additional courses in the candidate’s area of expertise.
- Participate in student recruitment and retention.
- Contribute to departmental and college activities.
Maintain an active program of scholarly and/or creative activity, including conference presentations, professional memberships, publications, arrangements or compositions, guest conducting, residencies, commissions, clinics, and recordings.
Departmental and College Service- Participate in departmental activities, including jury examinations, hearings, student recitals, departmental concerts, auditions, and recruitment events.
- Participate in College committees, programs, events, and other service activities appropriate to a tenure-track faculty appointment.
- Contribute to the academic and institutional life of Spelman College through collaborative and interdisciplinary engagement.
Required Qualifications
- DMA or equivalent terminal degree in Choral Conducting or a related field.
- Experience in collegiate and/or professional choral settings.
- Demonstrated ability to teach and conduct a broad range of choral repertoire, including traditional classical works, and to independently learn and prepare new repertoire.
- Knowledge of repertoire for women’s voices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of African American choral music.
- Evidence of scholarly and/or creative activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in music education, musicology, or music research.
- Experience with technology, digital media, and learning management systems.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and classroom/ensemble management skills.
- Professional relationships with choral organizations.
