The Structural Designer II is an early- to mid-level professional who supports the planning, design, and documentation of structural systems under the supervision of a Project Engineer or Senior Project Designer. This role applies established structural engineering principles to a variety of building projects, gradually increasing independence while continuing to receive technical guidance and oversight. The Designer II contributes to the successful delivery of project designs through accurate documentation, coordination, and collaboration with internal and external team members.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities. May assist with mentoring or supporting Designer I team members as assigned.
Essential DutiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with project engineering tasks and structural design activities for assigned portions of projects.
- Apply structural engineering concepts and calculations to the design of systems utilizing:
- Structural steel and composite framing
- Reinforced concrete and masonry systems
- Timber and light-gauge metal framing
- Shallow foundation systems
- Perform engineering calculations and design checks in accordance with applicable codes and firm standards.
- Prepare and revise structural drawings, details, and schedules under the direction of a Project Engineer or Senior Project Designer.
- Assist in the development of construction documents that comply with applicable building and zoning codes.
- Coordinate design information with other disciplines and consultants as directed.
- Support shop drawing and submittal reviews for conformance with design intent.
- Participate in project coordination meetings as assigned.
- Assist with site visits and construction administration tasks, including documenting observations and supporting issue resolution.
- Respond to design-related questions with guidance from senior team members.
- Perform assignments with defined objectives, receiving ongoing technical direction and feedback.
- Demonstrate growing independence in routine design tasks while escalating complex or unfamiliar issues appropriately.
- Actively seek to expand technical knowledge, code understanding, and proficiency in structural systems and documentation standards.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
- Working knowledge of structural drafting and modeling software of the current versions of Revit, AutoCAD, 3D Studio or Form-Z, Photoshop, PowerPoint, MS Word, and MS Excel.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering concentration.
- 2-5 years of professional structural design experience.
- Progress toward professional licensure preferred.
