Job SummaryUnder minimal supervision, provides senior expert professional support in one or more of the following areas: OMAT, maintenance, construction, intermodal, planning, utilities, surveying, environmental or traffic. May supervise subordinates or serve as a lead worker providing training to lower-level staff.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Supervisor is responsible for leading, coordinating, and overseeing GDOT’s Statewide Freeway ITS Comprehensive Maintenance Program including field devices, communications networks, and ITS Asset Management System (IAMS).
- Plan, assign, and supervise daily maintenance activities for ITS field devices and other related infrastructure.
- Manage innovative pay‑for‑performance Statewide ITS Comprehensive Maintenance Contract (CMC), which requires contract initiation, review, and execution of work orders, task orders or purchase orders.
- Monitor system performance and ensure ITS device availability meets or exceeds established baseline.
- Monitors data inputs from NaviGAtor and other traffic operations software packages to ensure the system is performing correctly.
- Respond to and resolve inquiries related to ITS devices and operations.
- Manage engineers as well as consultants and contractors.
- Collaborate with Traffic Management Center (TMC) staff, engineering teams, and partner agencies on system improvements and new technology deployments.
- Serve as the engineering review for Statewide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), such as NaviGAtor and ITS Comprehensive Maintenance Contract.
- Act as a liaison for local governments on all ITS programs, including providing engineering and technical support on ITS device maintenance and operations.
The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications.
Entry Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of job‑related experience; OR an Associate degree in a related field and four (4) years of job‑related experience; OR one (1) year of experience at position equivalent.
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology, engineering with a civil specialization, construction engineering or other engineering/engineering technology field of study and two (2) years of job‑related experience AND an Engineering‑in‑Training (EIT) certification.
- Foreign degrees require a completed Equivalency Evaluation by NCEES along with an official transcript.
- Possesses knowledge of Intelligent Transportation System systems and components.
- Demonstrated experience in traffic signal software and signal timing operations.
- Demonstrated experience in ITS network design.
- Advanced level experience in highway/transportation engineering and the plan development process (PDP).
- Experience managing transportation programs or projects.
- Experience with ATMS/ITS designs and signal interconnect designs based on GDOT Design Policies.
- Leadership experience to others and less experienced engineers as well as consulting engineering firms.
- Experience planning, supervising, training and evaluating the work of subordinates and promoting a positive environment.
- Ability to read and interpret roadway construction and right‑of‑way plans and pertinent documents.
- Experience preparing or reviewing correspondence and/or technical reports for oral and written presentations.
- Experience calculating appropriate quantities and/or cost estimates associated with traffic control/safety enhancement projects.
- Adaptability to new and innovative design processes.
- Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to develop new insight into situations.
- Ability to analyze and formulate solutions.
- Commitment to providing quality customer service.
- Experience working and communicating with supervisors, subordinates, local officials, engineering consultants, other Department offices, federal and state agencies, local governments and the public to meet their needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reading and comprehending information such as ITS/ATMS and signal interconnect plans.
- Experience reviewing, interpreting, and writing contracts.
- Experience writing work orders and task orders.
- Experience reviewing and revising GDOT Specifications.
- Current Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
