The Project Manager for the City of Atlanta plays a key leadership role in planning, coordinating, and delivering capital projects that support the City of Atlanta Moving Atlanta Forward projects. This position ensures that infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and urban forestry initiatives align with the City's mission and commitment to equitable, inclusive, and innovative public services.
Capital Project Development & Execution
- Initiates, defines, and scopes capital projects, transitioning project concepts into actionable capital assets.
- Oversees the full lifecycle of major capital projects, including planning, design, procurement, construction, and closeout.
- Monitors and controls project performance related to cost, schedule, quality, and safety.
- Ensures compliance with City standards, policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
Urban Forestry & Arborist Responsibilities
- Responds to requests for inspections of trees on City property.
- Performs tree risk and health assessments in accordance with industry standard Best Management Practices (BMPs).
- Reviews plans requests for tree work on City property to ensure compliance with the City of Atlanta Tree Protection Ordinance.
- Reviews construction documents submitted for ordinance compliance and potential impacts to public trees.
Policy, Procedure & Program Development
- Develops and implements project management policies, procedures, and best practices to support consistent and efficient project delivery.
- Contributes to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance departmental operations, environmental stewardship, and project outcomes.
Budget & Resource Management
- Manages the project budget, including forecasting, tracking, and reporting.
- Allocates resources effectively to support project priorities and ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Oversees project management providing leadership, direction, and performance oversight.
Stakeholder Coordination & Communication
- Communicates with internal and external stakeholders, including City departments, contractors, community groups, and the public.
- Reviews plans, prepares reports, processes associated paperwork, and ensures accurate data entry.
Safety & Risk Management
- Ensures the safety of employees, contractors, and the public throughout all phases of project and arborist operations.
- Responds promptly to health and safety concerns and implements corrective actions as needed.
- Identifies and mitigates risks associated with capital projects and tree related activities.
This position requires an experienced arborist with project manager background and capable of independently performing complex assignments typical of both disciplines. It is considered a promotional level role, attainable by individuals who demonstrate strong technical knowledge, leadership ability, and consistent high level performance.
- ISA Certified Arborist or equivalent credential.
- Knowledge of the City of Atlanta Tree Protection Ordinance and related policies.
- Experience in project management, capital project delivery, or related fields.
- Professional experience in arboriculture, urban forestry, or tree assessment.
- Ability to interpret construction documents, ordinances, and technical reports.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple complex assignments.
- Experience working in municipal government or public-sector project delivery.
- Familiarity with capital budgeting and CIP processes.
