Materials Engineer, Process Engineer
Our Opportunity
We are currently seeking a dedicated Materials Engineer to join our Metallurgical and Corrosion Engineering Practice in Atlanta, GA. In this role, you will collaborate as part of a team to perform comprehensive materials, metallurgical, and mechanical failure investigations. Your responsibilities will also include conducting field inspections and engaging in materials characterization and specialized testing.
You will be responsible for- Conduct hands‑on failure analysis to determine root causes of material failures
- Perform materials characterization and metallurgical analysis using laboratory equipment
- Plan, coordinate, and execute laboratory testing to support investigations and assessments
- Conduct field inspections to gather data and evaluate material conditions in real‑world environments
- Generate written work products, including PowerPoint presentations and detailed technical reports, to document findings and communicate results
- Effectively present results to both technical and non‑technical clients and staff
- Manage the day‑to‑day requirements of multiple investigative engagements, maintaining organization and efficiency across projects
- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong emphasis on materials science and engineering
- Proficient knowledge of materials characterization techniques, such as SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, CT, X‑ray, FTIR, and XRD
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, enabling clear and effective information exchange within the team and with clients
- Ability to work collaboratively within project teams, demonstrating a strong desire to contribute and support team objectives
- Willingness and ability to travel as needed to support project requirements
- Desired knowledge includes expertise in metallurgy, fracture mechanics, fractography, and failure analysis
- Familiarity with materials degradation mechanisms, including corrosion, is also preferred

CompensationOur consultants are rewarded for their technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. Exponent's total compensation plan is consistent with the expectations of the quality and quantity of work performed and with the professional standards set by Exponent. At the Associate and Senior Associate level, total compensation includes base salary, bi‑weekly bonuses for high‑intensity efforts, annual bonus, and 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.
The base salary range for this position is dependent on experience and capabilities which will be assessed during the interview process.
