Role Overview

The Roadway Engineer (PE) is responsible for the design, review, design verification and delivery of roadway and highway infrastructure projects, both urban and rural, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop roadway geometric design, including horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, corridors, and profiles.
  • Prepare roadway plans, specifications, technical memoranda, and quantity calculations; review similar tasks performed by team members and partners.
  • Ensure compliance with AASHTO, state DOTs, FHWA, MUTCD, and other applicable standards.
  • Coordinate roadway design with structures, drainage, utilities, traffic, ITS, and construction staging disciplines.
  • Sign and seal roadway plans; serve as Engineer of Record for roadway design packages.
  • Provide design verification of submittals, shop drawings, design changes, and construction RFIs.
  • Support design development across all project phases from conceptual studies to IFC and as‑built documentation.
  • Participate in technical meetings with internal production centers, design partners, clients, DOTs, and approving authorities.
  • Assist with constructability reviews, value engineering, and risk mitigation.
  • Respond to client RFIs and support proposal development, including technical approaches, design narratives, and fee estimates.
  • Perform site visits to support construction activities and resolve field issues.
  • Coordinate with ACCIONA Engineering back office in Spain.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned to support project and business needs.
Qualifications & Competencies
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSc/BEng).
  • Minimum 5 years of roadway/highway design experience, preferably on DOT or design‑build projects.
  • Experience signing and sealing roadway plans.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferably GA, NC, TN, LA; open to reciprocity in other states).
  • Relevant project experience equivalent to high-level qualifications for Roadways Area Classes/Company Classifications, especially GDOT Area Classes 3.01 to 3.05.
  • Strong working knowledge of AASHTO Green Book, GDOT Design Policy Manual, MUTCD, FHWA standards.
  • Experience coordinating with state DOTs and federal agencies.
  • Experience engaging directly with contractors or as clients; design‑build or PPP environment experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in roadway design software such as Open Roads Designer, InRoads, Civil 3D, or equivalents.
  • Experience with Multi‑Lane Urban Roadway Widening/Reconstruction or Multi‑Lane Rural Interstate Highway Design.
  • Strong understanding of roadway quantities, pay items, and cost control.
  • Familiarity with contract documents, special provisions, and non‑standard provisions.
  • Ability to perform technical reviews under compressed schedules.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on safety, quality, and compliance.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, priorities, and deadlines in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment.
