R&D - Packaging Engineer

Job Description

As a Packaging Engineer you will design and develop primary and secondary packaging for a cross‑section of Duracell products in accordance with Global Sector Initiative Master Plans. Primary focus will be on Lithium Coin and new product packaging. Supports Front End Innovation, Material and Structural Development in line with our Sustainability Principles. Scope includes introduction of new packaging materials, styles, and equipment across the Duracell Global Segments.

Cost savings on materials and labor. Working cross‑functionally on project teams and with packaging sites. Creation of Technical Packaging Specifications, Standards and Bills of Material.

• Material development, vendor development, package structural development internally and with external suppliers.
• Work closely with R&D on product and packaging innovations, specifically the interaction between package design and product efficacy and stability.
• Work closely with Engineering to optimize the packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer and internal requirements.
• Work with manufacturing departments and site packaging personnel to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
• Develop and qualify new packages, equipment, and materials.
• Packaging prototyping.
• Perform and/or organize required package testing to assure concepts will function within the targeted environment and record and maintain all testing data results.
• Prepare, develop, and coordinate the necessary documentation for plants, vendors, marketing, distribution centers and retail customers.
• Audit packaging trends.
• Manage work and projects within defined critical‑path schedules.
• Collaborate effectively with other functions internally, across the greater Duracell organization and with outside suppliers.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Packaging Engineer degree preferred.
• Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards.
• Proficiency in 3D design software and rapid prototyping preferred.
• Knowledge of packaging technology and materials; a certificate of packaging science highly desired.
• 2–5 years’ experience in Packaging Engineering/Design related work; related internship experience included.
• Technical mastery – ideal candidate demonstrates understanding and capability to work with packaging systems, materials, costing and processes; strong understanding of package testing to assure developed concepts function within the targeted environment is critical.
• Organization – must manage multiple priorities and details while maintaining focus on the larger picture and work well independently.
• Communication – strong written and oral communication skills are critical for dealing with internal customers, suppliers, and the overall packaging organization domestically and globally.
• Collaboration – must demonstrate ability to work well across functions and levels, and with suppliers.
• Embraces change – strong ability and interest in working in a fast‑paced flexible environment.
• Occasional domestic and international travel required.
