If you join us in this role, you'll gain expertise in a variety of areas, including NESC, Structural Pole Modeling, Electrical Power Calculations, GIS design training, Field Data Collection, and Client Design Standards.
Your greatest work is ahead!
This position is hybrid in nature, where 3 days/week are spent working in our office, collaborating with internal teams, and 2 days/week can be spent working remotely.
As a Distribution Engineer supporting our Electric Grid Modernization and Power Delivery programs, you can expect to:
* Perform design engineering for Leidos electric utility customers; you may also be performing individual design tasks in addition to QC efforts within your group.
* Develop work packages for overhead (OH), underground (UG) distribution design using customer GIS and Work Management systems.
* Support electric utility grid infrastructure projects, including system expansion, reliability improvements, and grid modernization initiatives.
* Work with other engineers and design leads on broad client issues including schedule adherence and team quality control; manage scope, schedule, and budget of work assigned.
* Review engineering design packages with clients; perform functional tasks, planning, and customer follow-up activities.
* Perform scope analysis of work assigned and maintain schedule adherence to support client priorities.
* Initiate continuous improvement efforts that drive efficiency and high-quality standards in client design deliverables.
* Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements, assessing and developing large design packages for complex cable/conduit projects in dense urban environments, work permit development, easements, and ROW applications.
* Utilize industry-standard engineering and design software, including Pole Foreman, JETS, and AutoCAD, to develop, review, and validate distribution designs.
* Be comfortable in both field and office settings; the role may require customer site visits to collect field data and support engineering design development.
* Participate in customer-facing activities and meetings as needed. (Job-related travel will be reimbursed at IRS-approved rates.)
What Sets You Apart (Background Requirements):
* 2+ years of experience in electric utility distribution engineering, grid infrastructure, or power delivery projects.
* Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial preferred) from an ABET-accredited institution; additional relevant experience and certifications may be considered in lieu of a degree.
* Experience supporting electric utility grid programs, including distribution system design, upgrades, reliability improvements, or grid modernization initiatives.
* Demonstrated proficiency with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
* Working knowledge of structural analysis, guying calculations, cable pulling calculations, and coordination of protective devices.
* Hands-on experience using JETS, Pole Foreman, and AutoCAD for utility distribution design and engineering deliverables.
* Ability to provide reliable transportation, as customer-related travel may be required. (Job-related travel will be reimbursed at IRS-approved rates.)
* Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience providing cost estimates, and knowledge of inventory units.
* Experience with utility work management systems, job estimating software, GIS platforms, and design tools.
* Familiarity with utility standards, construction practices, and grid modernization initiatives.
* Previous experience supporting investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, or electric cooperatives.
