Job Description
kW Mission Critical Engineering, a WSP company, is seeking a Telecom Lead Designer to provide technical leadership and design authority for telecommunications systems on mission‑critical and high‑performance building projects, supporting projects from early design through construction closeout.
OpportunityLead the Telecommunications discipline on a range of high‑quality, high‑profile, local, national, and international projects, collaborating with architects, engineers, contractors, and owners to deliver reliable, scalable, and constructible telecommunications infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Serve as the design authority for telecommunications systems, owning technical decisions and final deliverables.
- Perform and lead BIM and CAD design assignments supporting the discipline.
- Design telecommunications systems, including structured cabling infrastructure, telecom spaces, pathways, cable trays, wireless access point layouts, and related ICT infrastructure.
- Integrate telecommunications systems with other building systems such as Electrical, AV, Security, Controls, and MEP disciplines.
- Develop and maintain Division 27 specifications, design narratives, and technical documentation.
- Define system architectures, routing strategies, redundancy concepts, and constructability approaches aligned with mission‑critical requirements.
- Produce accurate 2D drawings and 3D BIM models using Revit or equivalent platforms.
- Develop coordinated floor plans, riser diagrams, room layouts, equipment elevations, schedules, and details.
- Prepare cable schedules, pathway documentation, and technical specifications.
- Perform QA/QC reviews of telecommunications design packages to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with client and industry standards.
- Implement discipline best practices, internal standards, and BIM execution requirements across all deliverables.
- Meet required schedules while maintaining high design quality and consistency.
- Support projects through all construction phases, including administration activities.
- Review contractor submittals, respond to RFIs, and resolve field coordination issues related to telecommunications systems.
- Survey and evaluate existing conditions for retrofits, expansions, and brownfield projects.
- Participate in site walks and coordination meetings to verify constructability and field alignment with design intent.
- Lead telecommunications design efforts, coordinating scope, deliverables, and technical direction.
- Mentor and guide junior designers, providing technical oversight, feedback, and professional development support.
- Collaborate within multidisciplinary project teams to deliver coordinated drawing and specification packages.
- Represent the Telecommunications discipline in internal coordination meetings and client‑facing design discussions.
- Demonstrate understanding of broader services within kW Mission Critical Engineering and the integration of telecommunications within those services.
- 7+ years of experience designing low‑voltage systems for high‑performing commercial, industrial, or mission‑critical/data center buildings.
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant work experience.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, and other applicable software packages.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail, highly organized, self‑starter.
- Ability to travel to project sites.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Mission‑critical / data center project experience.
- Experience with international or multi‑region projects.
- Hands‑on construction administration and field experience.
- Industry certifications such as RCDD, DCDC, or related credentials.
WSP provides a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings. Expected Salary: $130,000 - $182,000.
