STATE JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision, serves as a lead engineer performing engineering assignments. Provides engineering assistance developing project plans, designs, or traffic engineering studies and other related documents, field experience with traffic signals and ITS hardware, cost estimates and other engineering technical reports for transportation projects. Provides training, support and knowledge sharing to other engineers.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES

This position will serve within the Engineering Software Standards Group, which is responsible for statewide support of CADD standards, all associated engineering software, hardware, and plotting.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Serving as technology resource for the office and the Engineering Division as well as serving on committees and providing technical expertise.
  • Developing, initiating and managing numerous engineering software projects including developing and maintaining project schedules.
  • Ensuring all GDOT design policies, guidelines and standards are available for access through the web internally and externally.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current technology trends by reviewing and evaluating new technology for the Engineering Division.
  • Identifying areas of improvement in current engineering software workflows and documentation and independently revising current or creating new workflows/documentation to maximize functionality and efficiency for end users of engineering software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include the Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Qualifications.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
AGENCY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Four (4) or more years of related experience in highway/transportation engineering.
  • Advanced level knowledge of project design.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and formulating solutions to complex design problems and recommending the best solution.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering mathematical reasoning and design computations.
  • Demonstrated experience generating construction plans using CADD.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Quality Controls and performing Quality Assurance checks for engineering reports and plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to conform to shifting priorities and demands and the ability to organize technical work in a manner that achieves project objectives and schedules.
  • Possess strong oral communication skills with the ability to express ideas and facts to groups and individuals.
  • Displays a high level of professional conduct, leadership, and embodies a high standard of professional integrity and ethical conduct.
  • Committed to providing quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing clear, organized, and technically sound written reports.
  • Advanced level experience using or supporting CADD and other engineering software.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced level knowledge of engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently of direct supervision to complete design work and other assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and implement improved design practices, based on best practices or research.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with Department Management and with the public, local and state government officials.
  • Demonstrated ability to train engineers, project managers and other disciplines.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with experience motivating and guiding others toward accomplishing project goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and solve problems and opportunities for innovative solutions that manage and improve design team effectiveness.
