Job Description & How to Apply Below

Project / Unit Description

The Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL), Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) Advanced Communication Systems Branch (ACSB) seeks a senior Signal Processing Engineer to research and develop innovative solutions for wireless communications and spectrum sensing systems. The Division merges advanced digital signal processing (DSP), communications technologies, adaptive algorithms, and AI/ML to create systems for adaptive communications, intelligent wideband spectrum sensing, electronic warfare (EW), and next‑generation cellular network technologies.

Projects span applied research to field demonstrations and deployed prototypes across many branches of the Federal Government.

Job Purpose

Develop and apply mathematical, statistical, computational, or modeling techniques to generate algorithms for analog or digital signal processing. This includes time‑ and frequency‑domain signal algorithms, communications and spectrum sensing algorithms, image processing algorithms, and sensors such as lidar or computer vision. Must write code in assembly or higher‑level environments, integrating algorithms into hardware, firmware, or software systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop methods and tools to perform research tasks to meet project objectives
  • Implement and test algorithms on various platforms
  • Lead or contribute to the development of whitepapers and proposals to support a research area
  • Support sponsors and potential sponsors engagement
  • Primary author of technical reports, presentations, journal articles, and conference presentations
Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead research and development of OSI layer 1 components for advanced communication system research, supporting layer 2 and 3 research
  • Collaborate on research and design of signal processing algorithms for spectrum sensing
  • Support and perform intelligent, adaptive algorithm research
  • Develop algorithms using Fixed Point Math and Simulink for FPGA implementation
  • Participate in project execution, attending technical meetings, completing assigned tasks, collaborating with colleagues, and presenting research
  • Identify metrics useful for observing and characterizing wireless communication system performance
  • Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, and contribute to new principles and concepts
  • Work on complex technical problems and provide innovative and ingenious solutions
