Mechanical Engineering Intern
Georgia-Pacific is seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to join our growing Internal Engineering team in Atlanta, GA. This internship will begin in August 2026 and end in December 2026. It is an exciting opportunity for a student who enjoys engineering design, problem‑solving, and working on real‑world projects in an industrial manufacturing environment. As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers supporting capital projects, equipment upgrades, piping systems, and facility improvements across multiple manufacturing sites.
You will gain hands‑on experience throughout the engineering project lifecycle—from field investigations and concept development to detailed design and construction support.
- Meaningful, hands‑on experience working on engineering projects that directly impact manufacturing operations
- Exposure to industrial mechanical and piping design in a collaborative engineering environment
- Experience using advanced technologies such as Leica 3D laser scanning, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Plant 3D
- Opportunities to travel to manufacturing facilities and participate in field engineering activities
- Mentorship from experienced engineers and exposure to projects from concept through construction
- Potential consideration for future full‑time engineering opportunities following graduation
- Assist with the mechanical design of equipment, piping systems, and facility improvements
- Create and modify engineering drawings using AutoCAD
- Support piping layouts and design using AutoCAD Plant 3D (experience is a plus, but not required)
- Participate in field visits to manufacturing facilities to verify existing conditions and collect engineering data
- Assist with engineering calculations, equipment selection, and technical documentation
- Work with Leica 3D laser scan data and point clouds to develop accurate engineering designs (training provided)
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers, project managers, operations, and maintenance personnel to develop practical engineering solutions
- Support capital projects from concept through construction
- Currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university
- Interest in mechanical design and industrial manufacturing
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD
- Valid driver’s license
- Must travel to manufacturing facilities as needed – travel is approximately 20%
- Legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship now or in the future
- Experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor
- Exposure to piping design or industrial/process facilities
- Experience with Leica 3D laser scanning, point cloud modeling, or reality capture technologies
- Internship, co‑op, or hands‑on engineering project experience
