Position: Engineering Assistant I, II, or III - Atlanta District

The Engineering Assistant Program provides rotational training and experience for entry‑level civil engineers, facilitating preparation for professional engineering licensing.

Essential Duties – Engineering Assistant I
  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing through training, exams, and mandatory documentation.
  • Applies engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a wide variety of transportation‑related activities.
  • Assists during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Assists in survey activities and collects engineering data at project sites.
  • Creates detailed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs.
  • Performs engineering‑related calculations, drafting, and design work.
  • Prepares drawings and exhibits to support public involvement.
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Uses automated roadway/structural/hydraulic design programs and computer‑assisted design/engineering systems.
  • Participates in the Engineering Assistant Career Development program, including job rotation, training, and continuing education.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties – Engineering Assistant II
  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work.
  • Assists in survey activities.
  • Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
  • Creates detailed PS&E.
  • Prepares and checks plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) and designs.
  • Observes and implements design standards and policy documents.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional Duties – Engineering Assistant III
  • Trains less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians.
  • Serves as a lead worker on technical and supervisory tasks.
  • Performs engineering‑related planning, design, data collection, evaluation, and analysis activities.
  • Reviews, designs, and details bridge and structural elements.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications – Education and Substitutions
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related science. Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees accepted, provided they are accredited by EAC/ABET, as described in the original posting.
  • Graduation no later than May 2026 is acceptable; proof of degree must be provided before the start date.
Experience
  • Engineering Assistant I – no work or supervisory experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II – 1 year of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time). No supervisory experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant III – 2 years of engineering‑related experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time). A passing score on the Professional Engineer (PE) exam before acquiring required experience may substitute for the experience requirement.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license; position requires operation of a state vehicle.
Additional Certification for Engineering Assistant II and III
  • TX Engineer In Training Certificate is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
Competencies – Engineering Assistant I
  • Knowledge of transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals.
  • Understanding of plans, specifications, estimates, and compliance requirements.
  • Computer‑aided drafting and design systems.
  • Plan review methods, processes, and procedures.
Competencies – Engineering Assistant II
  • Knowledge of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Highway construction and maintenance practices.
  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting.
  • Design review and cost estimating.
Competencies – Engineering Assistant III
  • Knowledge of governmental laws, rules, and regulations governing the area of responsibility.
  • Transportation design engineering principles, practices, and methods.
  • Leadership and supervision of engineering work.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Exposure to vehicles, moving mechanical parts, high places, heat, and chemicals.
  • Required protective gear: respirator, hard hat, or other applicable equipment.
  • Light lift up to 20 lb with frequent lifting or carrying up to 10 lb.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and crouch on varied surfaces without falling.
