Position: Controls Energy Engineer (Advanced Professional)

Job Summary

The Controls Energy Engineer is responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining building automation and energy management systems to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. This role combines technical expertise in control systems with a strategic focus on energy performance, supporting the organization’s goals for cost savings, environmental stewardship, and occupant comfort.

Responsibilities
  • Job Duty 1: Design, develop, and optimize advanced control strategies for HVAC, lighting, and other building systems to enhance energy efficiency, operational reliability, and occupant comfort. Apply engineering principles and data‑driven analysis to ensure systems operate at peak performance while aligning with sustainability and cost‑reduction goals.
  • Job Duty 2: Lead or support commissioning and retro‑commissioning efforts, verifying that systems are installed, configured, and operating according to design intent and performance standards.
  • Job Duty 3: Focus on developing energy conservation projects and conducting payback analyses to evaluate cost‑effectiveness. Manage projects from initiation through completion, including selection, contracting, and coordination of external contractors, consultants, and internal infrastructure teams.
  • Job Duty 4: Analyze building energy data and system performance trends to identify inefficiencies, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement; recommend and implement corrective actions or system upgrades.
  • Job Duty 5: Develop, update, and maintain technical documentation for control systems, including schematics, sequences of operation, and programming logic to ensure clarity and continuity.
  • Job Duty 6: Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies and control platforms that support energy conservation, smart building initiatives, and long‑term sustainability goals.
  • Job Duty 7: Collaborate with controls technicians and engineering teams to implement, test, and fine‑tune control sequences and system logic for optimal performance.
  • Job Duty 8: Provide technical guidance and training to facilities staff and stakeholders on energy management practices, control system functionality, and operational best practices.
  • Job Duty 9: Ensure compliance with internal standards, safety protocols, and applicable regulatory requirements, maintaining a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Job Duty 10: Perform other job‑related duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Experience

Four or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Certifications, Licenses, or Permits

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
  • Engineer in Training (EIT)
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Certified X‑A (CxA)

Preferred Educational Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field, or equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE

  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical wiring diagrams and control schematics
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, and building automation infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of control theory as applied to construction and building automation systems
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, including their integration with control platforms
  • Familiarity with digital control systems and relevant programming environments or languages used in building automation

SKILLS

  • Proficiency in energy efficiency technologies and principles of sustainable or green building design
  • Experience conducting energy audits and site investigations, with the ability to analyze findings and recommend actionable improvements
