Job Summary

The Controls Energy Engineer designs, optimizes, and maintains building automation and energy management systems to improve operational efficiency, sustainability, and occupant comfort. This role blends control system expertise with a strategic focus on energy performance, supporting cost‑saving and environmental stewardship goals.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and optimize advanced control strategies for HVAC, lighting, and other building systems to enhance energy efficiency, operational reliability, and occupant comfort.
  • Lead or support commissioning and retro‑commissioning efforts, verifying that systems are installed, configured, and operating according to design intent and performance standards.
  • Develop energy conservation projects and conduct payback analyses to evaluate cost‑effectiveness, managing projects from initiation through completion.
  • Analyze building energy data and system performance trends to identify inefficiencies, anomalies, and opportunities for improvement; recommend and implement corrective actions or upgrades.
  • Develop, update, and maintain technical documentation for control systems, including schematics, sequences of operation, and programming logic.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies and control platforms that support energy conservation, smart building initiatives, and long‑term sustainability goals.
  • Collaborate with controls technicians and engineering teams to implement, test, and fine‑tune control sequences and system logic for optimal performance.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to facilities staff and stakeholders on energy management practices, control system functionality, and operational best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with internal standards, safety protocols, and applicable regulatory requirements, maintaining a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals.
Educational Requirements
  • Associate's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Experience
  • Two or more years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • BAS manufacturer certification (JCI, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, etc.).
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical wiring diagrams and control schematics.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, and building automation infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of control theory as applied to construction and building automation systems.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, including their integration with control platforms.
  • Familiarity with digital control systems and relevant programming environments or languages used in building automation.
  • Proficiency in energy efficiency technologies and principles of sustainable or green building design.
  • Experience conducting energy audits and site investigations, with the ability to analyze findings and recommend actionable improvements.
  • Physical ability to walk construction sites, including stairs and ladders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
