Job SummaryUnder broad supervision, performs introductory engineering work assignment. Provides engineering assistance with plans, designs, costs and the coordination of new transportation construction or maintenance activities.
Position DutiesServes as a design engineer in one of four design teams which are responsible for developing and maintaining GDOT design policy guidelines and standards. These teams are organized into the following six areas: (1) Water Resources; (2) Standards and Roadside Design; (3) Hydraulics; (4) Design Policy; (5) Lighting, and (6) Conceptual Design/PDP process. This position will be assigned to the Water Resources team, and may be asked to support the other teams as needs arise.
Responsible for performing a wide range of services related to: hydrology and roadway hydraulics, roadway drainage systems, erosion and sediment control, pond routing, and post-construction water quality (i.e., MS4). This includes support of project delivery and overall compliance with federal and state regulations/permits. Responsibilities may also include providing instruction, reviewing current research and national practices, and serving as an SME in support of engineering studies and design.
SpecificResponsibilities
- Prepare plans and studies relating to roadway hydraulics and water resources in support of projects, existing drainage problems, and legal cases.
- Provide on‑call SME support relating to projects, existing drainage problems, and legal cases.
- Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of national and state‑level best practices, legislations/regulation, and research. Update GDOT design policies and construction standards/details where needed. Attend conferences as appropriate.
- Perform (and manage) reviews of plans and reports relating to roadway drainage system design, erosion and sediment control, stream restoration, and MS4.
- Assist with management of GDOT’s MS4 program, including coordination with state and federal agencies.
- Providing training related to erosion and sediment control, roadway drainage, and MS4.
The selected candidate must meet the advertised minimum qualifications to include State Entry Qualifications as well as Agency Specific Minimum Qualifications.
Entry Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or civil engineering technology from an ABET accredited college or university AND one year of related experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of highway/transportation engineering.
- Demonstrated knowledge of engineering standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrated experience in roadway drainage design and two or more of the following areas: geometric design, capacity analysis, roadside design, erosion sediment control, and MS4 (water quality).
- Demonstrated experience generating project plans through the use of computer-aided drafting and/or design (CADD).
- Demonstrated experience in preparing calculations, quantities and cost estimates associated with highway/transportation projects.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing and formulating solutions to complex design problems and recommending the best solution.
- Demonstrated experience preparing clear, organized written engineering documentation and reports.
- Committed to providing quality customer service.
- Displays a high level of professional and ethical conduct.

- Demonstrated ability to define and implement engineering solutions which address engineering deficiencies in transportation infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ability to organize work including balancing resources to manage conflicting deadlines in a manner that achieves all project goals.
- Demonstrated experience to work independently of direct supervision and guidance to design complete roadway construction projects.
- Possess strong oral communication skills with the ability to express ideas and facts to groups and individuals.
- Demonstrated experience interacting management within the Department, with the public, local and state government officials.
