PositionSummary
The Technical Design Engineer utilizes computer‑aided design software and drafting equipment to create 2D or 3D drawings, blueprints, schematics, and related technical renderings. Responsibilities include producing detailed drawings that capture scales, processes, dimensions, topography, angles, and engineering information, developing drawings from notes, sketches, existing drawings, design concepts, verbal instructions, and/or engineering specifications, and documenting updates in accordance with engineering change procedures.
The TDL leads and guides team members for project deliverables and participates in project meetings including Customer kickoff, OPS Design kickoff, SDWs, Pre‑Sales, and OPS assessment site visits.
- Serve as layout creation expert during the operations design phase
- Provide high quality 2D and 3D drawings and support the creation of feasible layouts
- Demonstrate 3D with catalog creation, fly throughs and animations
- Mark possible obstructions in layouts between building or MHE elements
- Provide master layouts from different supplier and building drawings across sections
- Prepare drawings in Fortna standards based on layers and representation of technical elements
- Regularly track drawing tools on the market
- Create drawings and assets for best practice solutions in 2D and 3D for a library, using current design practices for material handling systems
- Adhere to Fortna and department standards and contribute to improvements
- Attend and document required meetings; maintain good design notes; participate in company training
- Travel to work sites at or above 35% of yearly time
- Respond to communications promptly; be available, approachable, and reliable
- Mentor and coach team members; deliver constructive criticism
- Lead QA reviews; deliver technical expertise
- Take ownership of project deliverables; develop project plans and resource planning
- Two‑year engineering and/or drafting degree or high school diploma with five years of relevant experience
- Five years’ experience with AutoCAD or equivalent
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
- Proficiency in Demo 3D
- Experience in standard design of material handling equipment and general operational knowledge of distribution centers with a focus on automation design
- Knowledge of technical feasibilities of commonly used technology
- Ability to improve concept layouts to achieve economical use of materials
- Willingness to expand knowledge of industry best practices and innovations
- Strong organizational, time management and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to communicate in English at a conversational level
- Able to travel occasionally nationally and internationally
- Experience in preparation of layout design drawings for logistic solutions
- AutoCAD 2D, 3D, Inventor or equivalent design package
- Demo 3D
Office environment with extended periods of sitting and computer use. Some travel to client sites may be required; physical presence in various environments and locations can be necessary.
