FLSA: Exempt Employment Status: Temporary/Full-time

Compensation: $1,225.00 per week paid biweekly

Productions: Silent Night October 19 – November 15, 2026 | Carmen January 3 – February 7, 2027 | Tosca April 2 – May 9, 2027

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Production Stage Manager, the Assistant Stage Manager is a core member of the stage management team responsible for supporting all aspects of rehearsal preparation, technical production, and performance operations. The ASM works in close collaboration with the PSM, production department, artistic staff, and all technical departments throughout each production process.

The ideal candidate is calm and solution-oriented under pressure, capable of working with precision and care in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment, and brings a professional, collaborative demeanor to every rehearsal and performance.

Candidates may apply for one or more productions, but preference will be given to those available for multiple productions. Availability for the full contract period of each production applied for is required. Travel and housing are available for non-residents.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Rehearsal & Stage Operations
  • Attend all staging, technical, and dress rehearsals, production meetings, and performances, as assigned
  • Support the PSM in running daily rehearsals; step in to run rehearsals independently when the PSM is unavailable.
  • Knowledge of a theatrical ground plan and able to assist in taping out a floor and maintaining a spike map.
  • Prepare and maintain all assigned production paperwork, including Prop Preset & Running, Props Lists, Wardrobe Running, A/V Banda Running, Runlist (WWW), Spike Matrix, First Entrance Timings
  • Coordinate daily rehearsal room needs with props and costumes departments
  • Develop and maintain a personal ASM score tracking performer cues, prop handoffs, presets, and wardrobe changes
  • Maintain the rehearsal room, call board, hospitality, office supply stock.
  • During the technical period, work and communicate closely with the PSM, and run crew on all scenic moves, cue placement, and department coordination
  • Maintain stage safety operations, cast and crew needs, and show spike marks and performance-related paperwork
Communication & Administration
  • Support union compliance (IATSE, AFM) in collaboration with the PSM, Production, and Artistic management teams
  • Report rehearsal, production, and artist issues or concerns to TAO management in a timely manner
  • Attend production meetings and communicate relevant notes to appropriate departments
  • Assist with maintenance of living documents, including production archives, as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the PSM
COMPETENCIES
  • Ability to communicate with and effectively organize large groups of people, including children, in both rehearsal and performance setting
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a busy production environment
  • Exceptional attention to detail in all aspects of work
  • Ability to exercise responsible judgment and maintain mature, professional interpersonal relationships
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as production schedules require
  • Ability to communicate with and effectively organize large groups of people, in both rehearsal and performance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum of two years of professional stage management experience; prior work in opera (professional or educational) required
  • Demonstrated ability to read music and call cues accurately from a piano/vocal score
  • Familiarity with standard opera paperwork formats and a commitment to producing superior production documentation
  • Physical requirements:

    ability to stand for extended periods, navigate complex stage settings in low-light conditions, and lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
