Job Overview

The Lighting Director is the lead for the lighting department on assigned productions at Warner Bros. Discovery. The role works closely with the Lighting Designer, Production Director, Producer, Video Engineers (V1) and Electricians to achieve the desired lighting look for studio and location productions. The Director is responsible for show light planning, programming, operation, and inventory management.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare lighting needs for live studio and/or remote productions in partnership with Production and Operations, Directors, Producers, Engineers, and Electricians.
  • Identify and select the correct lighting equipment to create the optimal show look for each production.
  • Actively monitor live/taped production lighting, instruct and supervise all lighting show staff to ensure a successful show.
  • Maintain compliance with safety regulations, including OSHA and ETCP guidelines.
  • Provide creative ideas to improve overall quality of show production and troubleshoot lighting‑related issues.
  • Assist in inventory management, ensuring equipment is accounted for, stored, and maintained.
  • Collaborate with Production Management and Technical Operations to identify and special‑order equipment needed for studio productions.
  • Co‑operate with the Lighting Designer to install and direct the overall lighting design and vision for the show.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to team members and mentor crew to improve their lighting skills.
  • Create and maintain Vectorworks/CAD‑based lighting plots for all live productions at Techwood Studios.
  • Consult with Production and Production Operations on capital expenditures, rentals, testing, and evaluation of new equipment.
  • Keep current with advancements in lighting technologies and maintain industry standards.
  • Handle pressures of live programming and limited time constraints; work flexible, non‑traditional hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Travel as required.
Qualifications
  • 6‑8+ years of network‑level broadcast production experience leading lighting teams for studio and remote productions.
  • In‑depth knowledge of current industry standards and comprehensive understanding of GrandMA & ETC control systems, including completion of in‑person MA user training and advanced user training.
  • Extensive knowledge of lighting techniques and equipment, including moving lights, LED fixtures, media servers and special effects lighting.
  • In‑depth knowledge of AC power systems including power distribution and load balancing.
  • Expertise with the use of intelligent lighting fixtures and control system networking for entertainment technology.
  • Ability to design and plan lighting schemes aligned with production’s creative vision.
  • Proficiency in creating CAD‑based lighting designs and lighting plots for consistent reproduction of desired visual image.
  • Strong leadership and excellent communication skills, capable of clear and concise instruction.
  • Ownership and accountability for assigned productions.
  • Strong computer skills, logical approach, and creative eye.
  • Capacity to work under the pressures of live programming and limited time constraints.
  • Availability to work flexible, non‑traditional hours, weekends and holidays, and travel as required.
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30 or ETCP certification (preferred).
  • Knowledge of new technologies (preferred).
