Summary / Objectives

The Commercial Portfolio Manager supports the commercial loan and deposit portfolio of one or more Relationship Managers, providing quality underwriting, sound portfolio management, and superior client service.

Essential Functions
  • Analyze financial information to evaluate creditworthiness of new loan requests, renewal loan requests, and ongoing portfolio management activities within the parameters of the Bank’s policies and procedures.
  • Complete industry research to support existing and new customers.
  • Compile commercial loan packages, ensuring completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Provide written credit memos, financial analysis of borrowers, guarantors, and transactions, risk grading, and recommendations.
  • Perform additional credit analysis using in-depth tools beyond traditional spreads and global cash flow, such as CRE analysis tools.
  • Guide loan requests through the Credit Approval Process and ensure structures meet client needs and the Bank’s operating objectives.
  • Ensure large commercial loan relationships comply with State, Federal regulations, and Bank policies.
  • Monitor and service large commercial loan portfolios through portfolio management, covenant testing, tracking, servicing reviews, and exception clearing.
  • Grade risk of each loan and recommend adjustments as circumstances change.
  • Assist Relationship Managers in credit presentations to Credit Administration, committees, and leaders.
  • Ensure proper documentation in file for all loans and treasury approvals.
  • Collaborate with Relationship Managers, LOA, and operational teams to resolve documentation or compliance deficiencies.
  • Accompany Relationship Managers on calls with existing and prospective customers as requested.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with internal partners including Loan Operations, Credit Administrators, Branch Personnel, and external stakeholders such as attorneys and developers.
  • Lead special projects as directed by Credit Administration Leadership.
  • Continuously update skills through professional training and cross-training opportunities offered by the Bank.
  • Minimize past‑due loans in partnership with Relationship Managers, Credit Administrators, and Loan Assistants.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and prospects within a risk‑management context.
  • Demonstrate commitment to fair lending practices and stay knowledgeable on laws and regulations governing lending activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Bank policies, State and Federal regulations, and Corporate policies.
  • Build relationships with attorneys, appraisers, developers to enhance the Bank’s image and reputation.
  • Stay abreast of products and services offered by the Bank.
  • Follow regulatory requirements including BSA, AML, CIP, and OFAC to detect and deter money laundering and other unlawful activities.

Qualifications & Education
  • Four‑year degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • Graduation from a recognized school of banking is an asset.
  • Minimum 4–6 years of experience in credit analysis, commercial banking, business banking, with at least 2 years of portfolio management or underwriting experience supporting middle market.
  • Familiarity with loan structuring and documentation.
  • In‑depth knowledge of federal and state lending regulations and Bank policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Training / Classes
  • South State Bank credit policies, procedures, and underwriting standards.
  • Annual regulatory and compliance training.
  • Additional training as required.
  • New Employee Orientation.
Physical Demands / Work Environment

Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time and effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, and reports.
