Emory Decatur Hospital’s OR has a robust Robotics program and offers many specialties while serving as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. It includes a 22‑bed unit with a 1:1 nurse‑to‑patient ratio and serves a diverse patient population of Orthopedics, Robotics‑General/Bariatrics, GYN, Oncology, Urology, Surgical Oncology, Vascular, Pain Management, ENT, and Ophthalmology.
Shift6:30 am – 3 pm, 5 days per week.
Job DescriptionImplements and evaluates care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients undergoing diagnostic and invasive surgical procedures. Provides care to patients with complex health issues and serves as a clinical resource to staff. Analyzes and anticipates less predictable outcomes of surgical interventions, leads service area based committees, and is an expert in at least one specialty area while handling multiple specialties.
Responsibilities include identifying cost‑containment activities, monitoring supplies, maintaining par levels, planning surgical procedures, implementing interventions, and communicating with the peri‑operative team. Participates in developing and revising procedures and protocols, documents all aspects of care, and establishes goals in clinical practice, management, education, and research. Functions as a resource for patient advocacy, interdisciplinary needs, supply resources, staff and patient education, and orientation.
Assumes a role model or mentor position and aids in quality improvement, research, and performance improvement programs. Assists surgeons and nurses with patient care, equipment preparation, aseptic technique, and surgical procedures in the operating room. Prepares the OR, sets up specialized instrumentation, and follows pre‑ and post‑operative protocols.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduation from a surgical technology program or equivalent job training, which may include military peri‑operative programs and/or hospital‑based training programs.
• Certification in Surgical Technology preferred.
• Two years multispecialty experience with one year in a complex specialty area; able to function as a clinical expert in two or more complex specialty service lines and float to others as needed.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
• Lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying up to 25 lbs.
• Occasional to frequent standing, walking; occasional sitting; close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Physical demands may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks.
Factors affecting environmental conditions may vary. Exposures include blood‑borne pathogens, bio‑hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care injuries, radiation, shift work, and travel. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, is required.
