POSITION SUMMARY:
The Fleet IT Specialist is responsible for the oversight, functionality, and reliability of all electronic systems installed across the Atlanta Public Schools transportation fleet. This position supervises Electronic Technicians and ensures that all vehicle-based technology, including camera systems, GPS/telematics, tablets, and communication devices, remains fully operational to support safe and efficient student transportation. This role serves as the primary technical authority for fleet electronics, leading diagnostics, repairs, vendor coordination, warranty management, and preventative maintenance planning.
The Fleet IT Specialist ensures timely response to operational needs, including video retrieval requests, and maintains compliance with district policies and safety standards.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
• High school diploma or GED required
• Associate's degree in Automotive Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• Additional years of equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement
Certifications/Licenses:
• Valid Driver's License required
• CDL preferred or ability to obtain
• OEM or vendor certifications related to vehicle electronics or telematics systems (preferred)
• Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting certifications (preferred)
Experience:
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in vehicle electronics, automotive electrical systems, or fleet technology
• Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or lead experience preferred
• Experience in K 12 education or public sector preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
• Strong leadership and team management skills
• Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced operational environment
• Strong communication and coordination skills across departments and vendors
• Proficiency in data tracking, reporting, and system analysis
• High attention to detail and commitment to safety and operational excellence
• Strong knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, multiplex wiring, and diagnostic procedures
• Experience with camera systems, GPS/telematics platforms, and mobile technology
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Supervise Fleet Electronic Technicians by assigning daily work, setting clear expectations, monitoring performance, and ensuring quality and timeliness of task completion
• Provide coaching, technical guidance, training, and support to enhance staff performance and development
• Ensure appropriate staffing and coverage across all fleet locations to maintain uninterrupted operations
• Oversee the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of fleet electronic systems, including cameras, GPS/telematics, driver tablets, and communication equipment
• Prioritize and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime and maximize fleet availability
• Collaborate with transportation leadership to align technology support with operational needs
• Diagnose and resolve complex electronic system issues using advanced tools and troubleshooting techniques
• Monitor system performance, troubleshoot connectivity and integration issues, and maintain system configurations and updates
• Ensure all fleet technology systems operate cohesively and efficiently
• Develop and implement a preventative maintenance program, including inspection schedules, testing protocols, and lifecycle planning for electronic components
• Analyze system performance trends to identify recurring issues and implement corrective actions
• Recommend upgrades and improvements to enhance system reliability and efficiency
• Serve as the primary point of contact for fleet electronics vendors, coordinating installations, repairs, updates, and upgrades
• Manage warranty claims, ensuring proper documentation, follow-up, and resolution
• Evaluate vendor performance and provide technical recommendations to support procurement decisions
• Support operations by prioritizing critical repairs, responding to system failures, and minimizing service disruptions
