This role blends hands-on AWS administration with security compliance activities for an existing IL4 environment. The selected engineer will lead the initial accreditation effort to onboard a mission application under an existing IL4 Authorization to Operate (ATO) and will transition into long-term operations, maintenance, and support of the cloud environment.
The position involves managing a mixed Windows/Linux ecosystem, supporting containerized workloads in EKS, working within AWS Gov Cloud, and ensuring strict adherence to DoD security and compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and submit RMF security documentation including MAPOC, MASC, MOU, IDAM policies, and POA&Ms.
- Define governance and operational roles through a consolidated RACI matrix.
- Conduct security control inheritance mapping, gap assessments, and support vulnerability testing activities.
- Configure and monitor network security within assigned IP ranges and integrate systems with continuous monitoring frameworks.
- Provide operational support for approximately 30–40 end users during 12x5 support windows.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure high availability of all cloud-hosted services.
- Execute patching cycles aligned with DoD timelines and manage approved change requests.
- Oversee AWS-native backup strategies using S3 and maintain STIG compliance across Windows Server and Linux (RHEL) systems.
- Support vulnerability remediation, compliance scanning, and coordination with platform engineering teams.
- Assist with operations across Amazon Work Spaces, App Stream 2.0, EKS clusters, RDS SQL Server, Cassandra DB, FSx, EFS, EC2, Git Lab pipelines, and multi-VPC environments.
- Certifications: AWS Certified Sys Ops Administrator – Associate (or higher) and CompTIA Security+.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of AWS administration; experience supporting DoD cloud environments, RMF/ATO processes, and IL4/secure cloud compliance;
Kubernetes/EKS administration;
Windows Server and Linux (RHEL) system administration; and use of IaC tools such as Terraform or Cloud Formation. - Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of NIST 800-53 controls, STIG requirements, AWS Gov Cloud capabilities and constraints, and vulnerability management tools and workflows.
- Preferred: Experience with IL4 platforms, FSx, Work Spaces, App Stream 2.0, Team Work Cloud, Space Force or Air Force support missions; AWS Solutions Architect or Dev Ops Engineer certification; and an active Secret clearance (desired but not required).
- Additional Skills: Excellent documentation skills, strong problem-solving ability, and comfort operating in secure, highly regulated cloud environments.
