Job DescriptionThe Health Analytics and Phenotyping Branch in the Health Emerging and Advanced Technologies (HEAT) Division within the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) seeks Student Assistants to work within our center at the Georgia Tech-Atlanta campus for Fall 2026.
This position would be responsible for working on projects related to health data analytics. In this role, you will work with a team of data scientists and engineers to craft innovative solutions for problems within public health, and to support clinical health systems and related research.
As a Health Analytics Student Researcher, work opportunities consist of building data visualizations, building models to track and analyze trends, building data pipelines to process, clean, and harmonize data, working with health data ontologies to build clinical phenotypes, or working with text data to extract relevant clinical features. Projects in our center range from building clinical phenotypes, to building interactive dashboards to track chronic disease to building models for image and text classification for vaping trends, as well as others.
RequiredMinimum Qualifications
Student Assistant
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Analytics, Mathematics, Health Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, or related field
- Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university during working semesters
- 2.0 or higher GPA
- Experience in 1 or more programming languages such as Python or R. Experience with SQL programming also beneficial.
- Task leadership experience
- Strong computational skills and ability to learn complex concepts
- Strong research skills (e.g. problem identification, literature search, source evaluation, critical thinking, information synthesis)
- Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
- Experience or coursework in health, public health or a related field
- Experience or coursework analyzing health data, particularly in regards to disease incidence and prevalence, cost trends, and others
- Experience or coursework in natural language processing, image classification, large language models, web scraping, or related experience working with text and image data
- Experience or coursework in building data visualizations, dashboards and infographics to report data findings
