unclassified position in the fulton county sheriff's office
the sheriff's office is seeking a highly organized, detail-driven paralegal to provide direct legal and administrative support. This role is essential to the agency's mission, assisting with legal research, case preparation, records management, and coordination across internal divisions. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates sound judgment, and maintains strict confidentiality.
key responsibilities
  • conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, briefs, and summaries.
  • draft, proofread, and format legal documents, including motions, subpoenas, discovery responses, and correspondence.
  • assist with case preparation for administrative hearings, civil litigation, and internal investigations.
  • manage and organize case files, evidence, and sensitive records in accordance with departmental policies.
  • track deadlines, court dates, and statutory requirements to ensure timely filings.
  • coordinate with command staff, deputies, county attorneys, and external agencies as needed.
  • support public records requests, including document review and redaction.
  • maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and procedures affecting the sheriff's office.
  • provide general administrative support, including scheduling, meeting preparation, and document management.
minimum qualifications
  • associate degree in paralegal studies or related field; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • certification from an accredited paralegal program (e.g., nala, nfpa) strongly preferred.
  • two or more years of paralegal experience, ideally in government, criminal justice, or civil litigation.
  • strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • proficiency with legal databases, case-management systems, and microsoft office.
  • ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • ability to pass a background investigation.
preferred qualifications
  • experience working in a law-enforcement, government, or public-sector legal office.
  • familiarity with state open-records laws, civil service rules, and employment-related investigations.
  • knowledge of criminal procedure, civil litigation, and administrative law.
work environment
work may involve occasional travel to courts, county offices, or detention facilities. Some tasks may require extended hours based on operational needs.

purpose of classification:

the purpose of this classification is to conduct legal research, to assist attorneys and judicial staff in court, and to provide lead direction to legal assistants or other administrative staff as assigned.

essential functions:

leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment;

assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.

conducts preliminary investigations: reviews complaints and other pleadings; conducts research to determine appropriate jurisdiction; reviews rules of procedure and calendar deadlines; gathers and evaluates initial facts and documents; interviews clients; maintains all related documentation.

conducts discovery investigations: determines and interviews witnesses; drafts and/or reviews interrogatories, requests for admissions, and requests for production of documents; coordinates collection and review of client files and documents; gathers, organizes, summarizes and analyzes data; drafts and/or reviews responses to discovery requests; locates and retains expert witnesses; prepares chronologies; reviews hearing notices and publications; maintains related documentation.

manages document production: obtains and reviews all documents in client's possession; conducts initial review for privilege; confers with attorney to determine which documents to produce; organizes and manages document production and litigation support, including reviewing, indexing, organizing, and analyzing documents; follows up on outstanding discovery requests.
