Building Custodian III – Fulton County Schools
Assumes responsibility for building operations, including cleaning the building, heating, ventilation, and general supervision of the maintenance of all equipment in the building and on the grounds. Directs and plans the work of custodial staff, making arrangements for successful operation, arranging workloads, and assisting employees to perform their duties satisfactorily. This position is the Head Custodian in the Middle and High Schools.
Responsibilities- Schedule and assign work for custodial staff to ensure cleanliness of the building.
- Monitor the upkeep of the building and grounds to ensure they are maintained in an acceptable manner.
- Operate various equipment weighing 75 lbs or more for scrubbing, buffing, and waxing floors; operate carpet cleaning and maintenance equipment weighing in excess of 50 lbs.
- Instruct custodial staff in the proper use of supplies and equipment.
- Ensure daily that all doors are properly opened during occupancy and all are bolted and secured after hours.
- Manage shutdown procedures for electrical power, water, and gas mains, and ignite pilot lights on kitchen appliances and boilers.
- Order custodial supplies and maintain an adequate inventory.
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance as needed, and submit maintenance work orders when necessary.
- Prepare cleaning and maintenance reports, document problems and performance issues of custodial staff, and assist maintenance personnel as needed.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Certification / LicensureNone required.
Experience QualificationsMinimum of 2 years of Fulton County Schools custodial experience or 3 years of outside custodial experience. Experience in a lead or supervisory position is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Extensive knowledge of cleaning methods essential to good cleaning and sanitation practices, supplies, and their use.
- Knowledge of care and cleaning of various types of heating and ventilation equipment.
- Knowledge of custodial supplies and equipment.
- Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
- Ability to clearly and accurately convey cleaning and maintenance instructions to others.
- Computer literacy; able to send and receive e‑mail and send online work orders.
- Ability to establish and maintain efficient working relationships with custodial staff and district employees.
- Effective supervisory ability.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Regular exposure to weather including heat, cold, dampness, and/or humidity.
- Requires climbing ladders; pushing and/or pulling.
- Must have sufficient strength and manual dexterity to operate equipment used to clean floors and carpets.
- Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull in excess of 75 pounds.
