Description
The nursing student is responsible for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to groups of patients with an assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance, and direction of a registered nurse.
Responsibilities- Provides personal care including baths, shampoo, shave, back rub, position changes, making beds, preparing patients for meals, feeding patients, and providing ice water.
- Answers call lights and bells promptly to meet patient needs.
- Collects specimens such as stool, urine, sputum, etc., and records inputs and outputs appropriately.
- Greets visitors, answers telephone, screens calls, takes appropriate information and messages, and distributes them to appropriate employees.
- Collects and records temperature and vital signs, obtains and records pertinent information per hospital policy, and assesses presence and extent of pain with RN guidance.
- Assists and/or feeds patients, provides between‑meal nourishment, fresh drinking water, and encourages fluids when indicated.
- Assists patients in progressive ambulation using a gait belt, wheelchair, stretcher, and bed, and administers enemas and douches as indicated.
- Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs; applies ace bandages, T‑ed hose, elastic stockings, and sequential compression devices.
- Assists with oxygen support and incentive spirometer; discontinues Foley catheters.
- Assists RN with restraint devices and side rails; observes isolation techniques and provides direct care to patients in isolation; may serve as a patient sitter.
- Assists in ostomy care and education; sets up orthopedic appliances; performs nursing functions requiring skill and judgment under RN supervision.
- Maintains records and reports necessary information regarding patient care; confers periodically with RN on nursing staff activities and matters related to patient care.
- Assists in patient and family education with RN; serves as liaison between patient and other health‑care team members.
- Prepares patient for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; maintains a safe environment for patient care.
- Observes IV site and appearance; may remove peripheral IVs, perform peripheral IV line dressing changes, and simple wound care.
- Attends bedside report, daily huddle, and interdisciplinary rounds.
- Maintains clerical and related unit supplies, places orders, and replenishes stock.
- Locates unit and system policies and procedures repository (Policy Manager).
- One year of experience including direct patient care, or completion of a nursing assistant training course, or current enrollment in an accredited BSN/RN or Associate RN program with completion of two clinical rotations.
- Clerical experience and proficiency with various computer applications preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- Medium‑heavy lift capacity up to 75 lbs (maximum), carrying objects up to 35 lbs.
- Occasional to frequent standing, walking, and occasional sitting.
- Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing).
- Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.
- Possible exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, bio‑hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, and radiation.
- Shift work and travel may be required.
- Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, is anticipated.
