College/Department InformationMedical College of Georgia Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) is an academic home to interdisciplinary translational research focused on disease detection, prevention, and treatment. The department conducts research on biomarkers, DNA repair, immunotherapy, and targeted therapies, among other areas. It offers PhD degrees and a combined MD/PhD program.
Job SummaryThe Research Assistant provides laboratory support to the Principal Investigator and laboratory team. Responsibilities include culturing cancer and normal cell lines, primary tissue cultures, performing proteomics (western blot, ELISA), DNA‑RNA isolation and purification, PCR/RT‑PCR, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, cloning, working with biological specimens, and providing assistance in mouse models. Data collection, analysis, maintaining institutional research protocols, and willingness to learn bioinformatics are also required.
Responsibilities- Perform technical work in support of ongoing research projects; participate in data collection and documentation, and develop new research techniques and procedures.
- Manage day‑to‑day laboratory activities, including ordering supplies, updating inventories, preparing reagents, and maintaining laboratory equipment.
- Analyze and present data verbally and/or in writing, following guidelines and protocols of research projects.
- Perform all other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology, social sciences, natural sciences, life or health care, or materials science directly related to the research area, with experience in a research or clinical setting.
- OR Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in the same fields with a minimum of three years’ experience in a research or clinical area.
Knowledge: Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Skills: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to review scientific literature, write technical protocols and reports, and present data in group meetings.
Abilities: Ability to maintain confidentiality; use sound judgment and work independently; willingness to use and learn clinical specimens, research animals, and cellular and molecular techniques.

Monday – Friday
Salary Minimum: $17.88 per hour
Pay Band: B5 – Salary to be commensurate with qualifications within the established range.
This position is (partially/fully) funded through external sources; continued employment is contingent upon availability of these funds.
Recruitment Period: Until filled
Benefits include health, dental, life insurance, Teachers Retirement System or Optional Retirement Plan, earned vacation time, sick leave, and 13 paid holidays. After 6 months of full‑time employment, employees may be considered for the Tuition Assistance Program.
