Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities
The AJC’s mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. To achieve that mission, we will transform ourselves from a storied daily newspaper into a modern media company.
To help achieve our mission, our Analytics + Research department is growing their dedicated audience research team with the goal of leveraging advanced analytics and research to drive strategy across the company. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Audience Research Senior Analyst who will play a pivotal role in providing data‑driven insights and strategic recommendations to enhance our understanding of our audience, optimize our content offerings, enable key decision‑making across all areas of the AJC – from brand strategy to product launches to customer experience initiatives – and drive the success of our organization.
This is an excellent opportunity for a media researcher passionate about local journalism with a deep understanding of the media landscape who wants to make a tangible impact. The ideal person for this role comes from a background in quantitative and qualitative research, has experience delivering insights to a multitude of stakeholders, is highly analytical and detail‑oriented, and has strong communication skills.
Primary responsibilities
- Design, assist and lead all aspects of quantitative and qualitative research projects, including development and review of the research brief, questionnaire or discussion guide, data analysis plan, and reporting to produce impactful analyses that drive company‑wide strategy.
- Perform quantitative audience research and analysis focused on news, content strategy, pricing, sales, marketing methods, customer preferences, demographics, economic conditions, advertising, distribution, and other factors that may influence the AJC’s strategic vision and product offerings or projects.
- Present research findings, insights, and recommendations to key stakeholders in a clear and concise manner, influencing decision‑making processes. Proactively meet with stakeholders to determine areas where research can enhance roadmap strategy or aid in finding new opportunities, communicate on‑going audience findings, and formally present findings to executive level leaders.
- Work closely with the Analytics team to tie offline research data to our expansive and ever‑growing audience database. This data will include consumer demographics, user behavior with our digital products, content analytics, as well as email and event marketing data.
Position Requirements
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of professional research experience (preferably in journalism, media or a related field).
- Graduation with an advanced degree may require less years of experience. More years of experience may be substituted for bachelor’s degree.
Additional Requirements
- Advanced knowledge and expertise in quantitative research methodologies (including survey design, sampling techniques, statistical significance, etc.).
- Experience with qualitative research (focus groups, ethnographic interviews, usability testing, etc.). Experience with market and industry research a plus.
- Experience using research software and tools, such as Alida, Check Market, or Qualtrics for fielding studies.
- Experience working with large data sets and an understanding of basic statistical analyses (knowledge of statistical modeling languages/tools such as Python, R, SPSS, or SAS a plus).
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office with the ability to create and deliver presentations.
- Experience with data visualization and charting tools such as Power
BI, Tableau, or other related software. - Strong presentation skills with the ability to translate complex subject matter and analysis into understandable concepts.
- Ability to analyze and make inferences that remove bias and represent outcomes in the most accurate way possible.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
