Department Information

The Markowitz Lab’s mission is to resolve how the brain controls movement in health and disease by developing precise tools for measuring behavior and neural activity. The lab focuses on kinematics tracking in mice and new fluorescent biosensors, with a particular emphasis on the dopamine pathway implicated in neurological disorders.

Job Summary

The Research Technician supports scientific research projects by conducting experiments, collecting data, and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies. This position requires a strong understanding of research methodologies and protocols and the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct experiments and research activities according to established protocols and methodologies to ensure the integrity and accuracy of data collected.
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring all instruments are calibrated and functioning properly to support ongoing research projects.
  • Collect, record, and analyze data meticulously using appropriate software and statistical methods to contribute to the research findings.
  • Assist in the preparation of research materials, including reagents, samples, and solutions, following precise formulations and safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation, including experiment logs, inventory lists, and safety compliance reports, to uphold regulatory standards.
  • Participate in training sessions for new laboratory personnel, providing guidance on equipment usage, safety procedures, and research protocols.
  • Monitor laboratory safety practices by conducting routine inspections and ensuring compliance with institutional safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Stay current on advancements in research techniques and technologies by engaging in professional development opportunities and attending relevant workshops or conferences.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and other research team members to develop project plans and timelines, ensuring milestones are met.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements

High School Diploma, GED, or Vocational School Diploma/Degree.

Experience

No prior relevant work experience required.

Salary range: $30,000.00-$40,000.00 per year.

Location:

Atlanta, GA. Job grade: R01. This is not a supervisory position. The position does not have financial responsibilities, does not require driving, is not considered a position of trust, does not require a purchasing card, does not require travel, and does not require a security clearance.

Candidate Expectations

Candidate will be expected to perform basic molecular biology tasks (cell culture maintenance, cloning, PCR), assist systems neuroscience experiments (mouse husbandry, histology, stereotactic injection), and carry out laboratory organizational tasks (inventory, regulatory compliance). Experience in these tasks is preferred, but the lab will train motivated individuals willing to work hard.
