Microbiologist II – Position Number

Scope of Work

The Microbiologist II will provide technical support for molecular and serological diagnosis of pertussis and diphtheria, including laboratory technical support services for molecular and serologic diagnosis, molecular subtyping, genome-based typing systems, and genomic and proteomic analysis of pertussis and diphtheria etiologic agents.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory assays such as real‑time PCR, DNA sequencing, genome-based typing systems, ELISA, Luminex bead‑based assays, western blots, and other immunologic assays.
  • Collaborate on the development and validation of diagnostic and molecular typing techniques for Bordetella and Corynebacterium species.
  • Provide laboratory technical support during pertussis and diphtheria outbreak responses or special requests.
  • Support development and validation of diagnostic tests, including advanced molecular detection, genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics.
  • Assist with domestic and international laboratory training for surveillance and clinical validation of laboratory tests.
  • Conduct inventory management and ordering of panels for proficiency testing.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures, Quality Management System (QMS), and CLIA regulations.
  • Maintain accessioning, specimen management, and database management for clinical and non‑clinical specimens.
  • Develop and optimize in vitro assays to measure biological responses to vaccination and infection.
  • Maintain eukaryotic cell cultures, cell banks, and cell plates.
  • Participate in collaborative studies, training, and QA/QC programs to promote technology transfer and harmonization of diagnostic assays.
  • Provide support to CDC Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during agency response activities and pandemic activities.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science with at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and 20 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences (organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, college algebra or equivalent).

Required

  • Research experience using molecular and immunological methods such as nucleic acid sample preparation, real‑time PCR, ELISA, and other standard laboratory techniques.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Documentation of daily work using good laboratory practice.
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork and interaction across CDC and with external partners.

Desirable

  • Experience developing real‑time PCR or ELISA‑based in‑vitro diagnostic assays.
  • Experience writing project reports, research protocols, and manuscripts.
  • Ability to synthesize new ideas for research projects.

Language Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Requirement

  • Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States.
Salary

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
