Job Summary

Analytical Chemist to work in the Inorganic and Radiation Analytical Toxicology (IRAT) Branch, Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of the DLS mission, the IRAT Branch provides high quality data for the analysis of clinical samples from various domestic and international studies to assess inorganic and radionuclide levels of individuals or populations.

The applicant will provide much needed support for analysis and development of methods which test for trace and toxic elements in biological samples. The selected applicant will have to obtain and maintain a CDC clearance.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and validate laboratory methods for the analysis of biological samples for trace and toxic elements, such as lead, cadmium, uranium, and arsenic, in the Elemental Analysis Laboratory (EAL) of the Inorganic and Radiation Analytical Toxicology (IRAT) Branch.
  • Implement validated laboratory methods for the analysis of biological samples for trace and toxic elements.
  • Setup, use, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrumentation, semi-automated or robotic liquid sample preparation systems, and related general laboratory equipment within a cleanroom BSL2 setting.
  • Adhere to quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) processes and compliant with the policies and procedures of the Division of Laboratory Sciences and regulations of CLIA.
  • Report routine analytical results electronically in a laboratory information system and by email. Summarize method development / validation activities for lab leadership in both informal and formal reports, verbal and written, including use of data processing / graphing software like Microsoft Excel.
  • Adhere to the universal precautions when handling biological samples and biological waste.
  • Adhere to the CDC/NCEH/DLS policy of treating all data as confidential.
  • Adhere to the CDC/NCEH/DLS and Battelle policy of laboratory safety and security.
Key Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. level in Chemistry with 3+ years' relevant experience or equivalent
  • Able to perform routine and independent operation and maintenance of ICP-MS instrumentation
  • Method/instrument troubleshooting skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Preferred experience:
    • Laboratory method development, including determining and validating optimum instrument conditions and documenting the development project in formal reports.
    • Routine, trace, multi-elemental analysis of biological samples, such as urine or blood, by ICP-MS in a CLIA-regulated laboratory environment
    • Evaluating bench QC results using modified Westgard rules.
    • Solution and standards preparation for trace element analysis and processing data with MS Excel including tables and graphs
    • Writing reports based on the evaluation of the latest scientific peer-reviewed literature
