Academy for Innovation in Medicine School Resource Officer (SRO) Position Summary

The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as an integral member of the Academy for Innovation in Medicine community, fostering a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. The SRO is responsible for maintaining campus safety through proactive planning, relationship building, emergency preparedness, crime prevention, and collaboration with school leadership.

As a founding member of the AIM team, the SRO embraces the school's mission of developing the next generation of healthcare leaders by modeling professionalism, integrity, service, and respect. The officer builds positive relationships with students while serving as a trusted mentor, educator, and liaison between the school, families, MARTA Police, the Atlanta Police Department, and other public safety agencies.

Because many AIM students travel by public transportation, the SRO plays a critical role in supporting student safety during arrival and dismissal, including coordinating with MARTA and assisting students traveling between the Lindbergh Center MARTA Station and the school.

Minimum Qualifications Education
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Georgia POST Certification required.
Experience
  • Minimum of five (5) years of sworn law enforcement experience.
  • Experience working in schools, youth development, community policing, or school-based programs preferred.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple agencies and community partners preferred.

Essential Responsibilities School Safety & Security
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Conduct regular safety and security assessments of the campus.
  • Assist school leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating emergency operations plans.
  • Coordinate and participate in emergency drills, including fire, lockdown, severe weather, evacuation, and reunification procedures.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, safety concerns, and security incidents.
  • Monitor campus during arrival, dismissal, transitions, and school events.
  • Assist with visitor management and campus access procedures.
  • Support safe traffic flow and pedestrian safety around the campus.
Student Safety & Support
  • Serve as a positive mentor and trusted adult for students.
  • Promote positive relationships between students and law enforcement.
  • Support restorative conversations and conflict resolution whenever appropriate.
  • Participate in student support meetings as requested.
  • Assist students experiencing crisis situations by connecting them with appropriate school and community resources.
  • Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and student support staff to promote student well-being.
MARTA Safety Partnership
  • Support safe student transportation to and from the Lindbergh Center MARTA Station.
  • Coordinate with MARTA Police regarding student safety and emergency response.
  • Monitor student arrival and dismissal routes between the station and campus.
  • Assist with transportation safety education for students and families.
Emergency Preparedness
  • Assist with maintaining the school's Emergency Operations Plan.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and recommend improvements.
  • Coordinate emergency response with local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and MARTA Police.
  • Assist with crisis response and incident documentation.
  • Support implementation of the school's safety and communication protocols.
Education & Prevention

Provide classroom lessons, assemblies, and parent education related to topics including:

  • School safety
  • Digital citizenship
  • Cybersecurity
  • Social media safety
  • Substance abuse prevention
  • Conflict resolution
  • Bullying prevention
  • Violence prevention
