Location:
North Shallowford (Metro North); positions are available throughout Georgia. All candidates must be available to work within a certain distance of their assigned operating headquarters; no relocation assistance is available.
The objective of the Apprentice Meter Tech program is to provide comprehensive, high-quality training that will prepare an Apprentice Meter Tech to progress to Meter Tech A positions with all the required skills and knowledge to perform the job safely and competently.
- The two‑year program is comprised of four modules, with each module consisting of classroom training and on‑the‑job training. Each module begins with classroom training and is then followed by on‑job training, designed to reinforce the classroom training. In addition to the training activities the Apprentice Meter Tech is expected to perform any productive work for which they are trained and qualified.
- To progress through the program, the Apprentice Meter Tech must satisfactorily pass evaluations during each module.
- Once an Apprentice Meter Tech meets all the requirements under this program, the employee will be promoted to “Meter Tech A” classification at the time a vacancy becomes available. The employee is assigned to the vacancy through the normal job‑bidding process. The assigned vacancy can be anywhere in the state of Georgia, and the employee must immediately relocate to that assigned location.
- This position interfaces with other departments in Georgia Power Company (including Marketing, Customer Services, Engineering, and Line), Customers, Electrical Contractors, and Electrical Inspectors to ensure metering installations are installed safely and meet Georgia Power Company specifications and comply with all applicable code requirements.
- Install and maintain single‑phase and three‑phase mechanical and electronic self‑contained metering installations.
- Install transformer‑rated metering systems, including sizing instrument transformers, determining multipliers, programming solid‑state meters, and the wiring and maintenance of all types of single and three‑phase transformer‑rated installations.
- Perform field tests on all types of self‑contained and transformer‑rated mechanical and electronic meters.
- Install, test and maintain pulse metering systems. Includes relays, recorders, totalizers, telecommunication systems, download load profile data, and determining pulse values.
- Install and program multifunction meters, hands‑on design, wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of multi‑circuit, multi‑function metering systems.
- This job requires frequently working outside in inclement weather.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining unit. Membership is optional. The starting salary is $7,120 per month (approximately $41.07 per hour) regardless of prior experience or skills. This pay rate is non‑negotiable.
Job Requirements- Preferred:
Documented minimum of 2‑year vocational/technical school degree or Associate in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications study, military training; or At least 4 years’ work experience with installation, maintenance, and testing of commercial and industrial meter systems and current meter technologies; or A combination of related work experience/military training and credits towards a 2‑year degree/certification in Electronics/Electrical/Telecommunications totaling 4 or more years. - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Detailed knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical principles.
