General Description
The Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker I performs semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work in support of the wastewater collection system and/or the water distribution system for the Department of Watershed Management in the division of Linear Infrastructure Operations. Responsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, alongside hand and power tools to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation.
Generally, works as part of a work crew. Work is performed frequently in cooperation with skilled trade employees, experienced equipment operators, technicians, or crew supervisors.
Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks, usually as part of a work crew.
Responsibilities- Completes assigned work orders efficiently and effectively; works with supervisor to prioritize work orders; works in a safe and organized manner to ensure safety for self, crew, and the public and to complete assignments correctly and on time.
- Inspect and repair water mains, manage traffic control during water main breaks, and perform water tap installations.
- Maintain and repair fire hydrants throughout the distribution system, including pressurization testing, material procurement, and maintenance tasks.
- Execute assigned tasks using power and hand tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy‑duty construction equipment.
- Assist in prioritizing and completing work orders efficiently and effectively.
- Conduct pre‑trip inspections on vehicles.
- Assist Crew Supervisors I’s & II’s with duties as needed and attend safety classes and meetings regularly.
- Coordinate with Crew Supervisors I’s & II’s to determine daily duties and ensure availability of necessary materials and supplies.
- Perform tasks related to pre‑tripping vehicles, including checking materials needed for jobs and inputting job locations into GPS for efficient navigation.
- Set up safety cones and ensure the safety of work areas before beginning maintenance tasks.
- Clean‑up work areas after completing tasks, maintaining cleanliness and orderliness. Collect scraps and leftover materials; blow debris from sidewalks.
- Check with supervisors daily to determine assigned tasks and ensure proper preparation.
- Safeguard work areas and flag traffic to ensure crew safety during maintenance activities.
- Locate water service connections and water main lines; mark service connections, water mains and sewer lines.
- Check utility truck to assure that proper equipment and tools are present and in working order; request approval for necessary materials to complete assigned work orders. Store tools.
- Maintain a safe and organized work area. Secure and store tools.
- Place flags or cones to control traffic in case of water main break, make a water tap on water mains, install tailpiece on water mains, install water meters, locate water service connections and water main lines; mark service connections, and water mains lines.
- Check utility truck to assure that proper equipment and tools are present and in working order; request approval for necessary materials to complete assigned work orders.
- Maintain a safe and organized work area; store tools; collect scrap and leftover materials; blow debris from sidewalks.
Selects from multiple standardized procedures, written instructions, and methods to accomplish assigned tasks.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of department policies and procedures: knowledge of general site safety as it pertains to water/wastewater operations and maintenance; methods, products, tools, and equipment used in water/wastewater maintenance and construction work, including basic mathematical principles.
- Skill in operating a variety of light‑to‑heavy power equipment (e.g., jackhammer); skill in maintenance of tools and equipment (hydraulic excavator, concrete socket).
