Maintenance Technician
The Atlanta History Center seeks a skilled and versatile Maintenance Technician to support the care, preservation, and daily operation of its historic buildings, galleries, and campus facilities. This position requires a multi-skilled technician with demonstrated aptitude in carpentry, plumbing, light electrical, and HVAC preventative maintenance (PM) work. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and experienced in maintaining both modern facilities and historically significant structures in an active public environment.
This role plays a vital part in ensuring a safe, functional, and welcoming experience for visitors, staff, and guests while helping preserve the integrity of the Center's historic assets.
General Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform routine and corrective maintenance on buildings, exhibits, offices, event spaces, and grounds.
- Troubleshoot and repair issues involving doors, locks, windows, drywall, flooring, and fixtures.
- Assist with maintaining historic structures using appropriate methods and materials.
Carpentry
- Perform basic to intermediate carpentry tasks including framing, trim, cabinetry repair, and finish work.
- Build, modify, or repair exhibit components, shelving, and furniture as needed.
Plumbing
- Conduct minor plumbing repairs such as fixing leaks, replacing fixtures, clearing drains, and repairing valves.
- Assist with PM inspections of plumbing systems and report larger issues to supervisors or contractors.
Electrical (Light Duty)
- Replace and repair lighting fixtures, outlets, switches, and ballasts.
- Assist with basic troubleshooting of low-voltage and general electrical issues in compliance with safety standards.
HVAC Preventative Maintenance
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as filter changes, belt replacement, lubrication, and visual inspections.
- Assist with monitoring system performance and reporting irregularities to HVAC contractors or management.
Preventative Maintenance & Inspections
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance checks to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs and work order documentation.
Event & Operational Support
- Assist with setup and breakdown for special events, exhibits, and public programs.
- Provide on-call or after-hours support as needed for emergencies or events.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all OSHA standards, safety procedures, and institutional policies.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Support compliance with preservation standards relevant to historic properties.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on maintenance experience in a multi-skilled role.
- Demonstrated proficiency in carpentry, plumbing, light electrical work, and HVAC PM tasks.
- Ability to read manuals, schematics, and work orders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in museums, historic sites, campuses, or large public facilities.
- Familiarity with historic building maintenance and preservation best practices.
- EPA 608 certification or willingness to obtain.
- Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools safely.
- Primarily daytime hours, with flexibility required for evenings, weekends, special events, or emergency response.
